I did a top-up just a couple of hours ago with no fee though. It still states on their website that these transactions are marked as a purchase.

It's far more likely that certain credit card companies have noticed what people are doing and categorised these as cash advances.

What card did you use fee free?

Update: Revolut support chat says there's been an unspecified "issue" with CC topups generating a cash fee, and that they're working to fix it. They didn't know if the fix would involve the issuers reversing the fees or Revolut refunding them.

    Interesting.

I consider topping up a prepaid card to be a (quasi) cash transaction and believe technically a cash advance fee should be charged.

However, I benefit from the current situation, so let's not rock the boat. :)

I topped up my Revolut card using my Lloyds debit card last night. The transaction is described as 'Money Orders - Wire Transfer'. I guess that is derived from the MMC.

  • I have definitely been charged £2.99 cash advance fee for topping up Revolut on 20th January and I have 0% barclaycard purchases at the Moment and never been charged before since July 2019

There's a hint of similar things in a nudge-nudge-wink-wink sentence in one of today's headforpoints.com posts

I contacted my credit card issuer and they said that THEY have taken steps to ensure revolut processes the top ups in a "correct" way and that the cash advance should always been applied in the past too.

So seems, credit card companies have enforced revolut to tag top ups as "Money Transfer" rather than Financial Institution".
  • Any more recent feedback about New Day issued cards? I used Marbles on 15 Jan with no fee.

Aqua on the 21st with no fee but I won't be doing it again now. Don't want to risk it.
