It worked till november, when I topped up around 6K to my revolut. Now, in december, I tried 4-5 times but it kept getting rejected. I called barclaycard and they said its because revolut has classified themselves as money transfer and barclaycard can not process anything more than 2050 as its considered a cash advance bla bla bla. I said, that is ridiculous, how can they change their MCC to money transfer when it was working perfectly fine like 3-4 weeks ago. The CS agent jst did some more bla bla and it was pointless.

Now, my wife tried to do this on her revolut using the additional cardholder card she has for the same barclaycard. And guess what, 3K went ahead smoothly. No clue why its like this.

Hopefully, Revolut are selectively discriminating against you by changing the way your continued excessive top-ups by credit card are treated, instead of removing the convenience of occasionally being able to top-up fee-free in this way for everyone because of their losses sustained in the abuse by such as yourself and others to whom you insist on publicising your cleverness.

If so, I applaud Revolut for penalising only the abusers and not their account holders in general who make use of all their various facilities. Merry Christmas to all..!

Looks like Revolut has started tagging top-up transactions as cash, so credit card issuers are now charging cash-advance fees :naughty:

I've topped up a few times recently with an aqua card with no fees. It's definitely not being marked as a cash advance. It still says that on their site.

Or card issuers are taking the stance that it is a cash transactions. Which in effect it is.

To be clear: This looks like a change Revolut made within the last few days. I did two topups to pay my tax bill, and both issuers have charged fees.

I did a top-up just a couple of hours ago with no fee though. It still states on their website that these transactions are marked as a purchase.

It's far more likely that certain credit card companies have noticed what people are doing and categorised these as cash advances.

Interesting; thanks. One was Newday (Amazon), the other was Nationwide (Select).

Tandem Card (behind curve) also charged cash advance fee for a top up to revolut on 20-Jan-2020
