    To get rid of the bones depends on the fish I think. For fillets of salmon, haddock etc, run your fingers over the fish against the grain so to speak, and you will easily feel any bones. Use tweezers to remove all the bones.

    I always cook the fish whole ( head & tail on ), when its cooked I just pull the head back towards the tail, and the whole spine & stuff all comes out together, it might just leave a few ( what I call belly bones ) which i get with tweezers after.
    P.S. its always handy to know someone who goes fishing a lot, you can really drop on some lovely big Trout. yum yum.:beer:

    How to cook fresh mackerel should have some ideas. I'm not a fish person myself so can't offer any advice

    I grow fish in my backyard in an aquaponics system. Aquaponics is like hydroponics but with fish - they provide the organic fertilizer. Currently we have about 80 silver perch and the AP garden is growing heirloom tomatoes, parsley, lettuce and chillies.

    You still got your aquaponic system going. I cannot believe mine this year and how fast the plants grow. Be interested to know how your getting on

    My fillets were pangasius, which is a kind of catfish according to google :confused::confused:

    Very popular with thai, vietnam,filipino cookery.

    Favourite recipes in our house:

    Cod (or general white fish) wrapped in bacon, cooked for a few minutes in a pan to get it started then into the oven for about 10 mins to finish it off.

    Trout/Salmon - same but without the bacon. Cooked skin down whilst in the pan

    Always served with lots of tartar sauce, buttered potatoes and broccoli mmm. Haven't been very adventurous in getting past the fillets though.

    Sea Bass. My favourite fish. I usually eat it when I'm out but recently got some from Sainsburys and cooked as per the instructions. It was fried in a little olive oil for about five minutes and then the little flavoured butter portions were melted and poured on top. It was delicious. I'm sure you could find a recipe for flavoured butter, I think this was orange and lemon and garlic and maybe another herb.

    Hard to beat salmon, though.

    My other issue is that I just moved to Holland and although I know the words for fish, tuna, salmon and cod, other varieties can be a mystery (strange name, look similar).

    Wikipedia can also be useful if there's a Dutch equivalent of an English page and vice versa.
    A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

  • I bought some fish called pangas in France - probably the same as the OP's pangasius. I actually bought it for our cat, who is in on a special diet. He wouldn't touch it - and having tried it myself I could see why. It was solid cardboard - no taste, no smell.
    If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?
