Thanks guys,I did make fishcakes using(as usual)canned tuna,I suppose i could buy a small portion of white fish and use that instead(wouldnt be as expensive as buying 4 x fish portions)
Thought about fish pie,i looked at those packs in Tesco, cant remember the weight but it didnt look like much fish for(i think)£2.85,id need 2 packs.
I realy like the fish with pasta idea..again i could get away with 2 salmon portions(instead of the more expensive 4,that i would need if i was baking in foil)
What is the cheapest type of white fish?..I was at a foos fare recently in Dundee, and there was a love food hate waste demo, the chef was cooking Hake portions.(she said it was very cheap)..lightly fried for a couple of minuts each side, they looked delicious..would be nice with Home made wedges and salad..our local Morrisons didnt have any...and when the chef said it was cheap, she didnt say how cheap, the other fish in morrisons looked very expensive!!...I think im quite savvy when it comes to the price of meat and free range poultry etc,but have no idea about fish,Cost wise what would an average "fish based dinner "for 4 cost?,is it possible to do it for under £4(total?)Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.
Week 10,total weightloss is now 13.5lbs Week 11 STSweek 14(I think)..-2, total loss now 1 stone exactly
GOT TO TARGET..1/2lb under now weigh 10st 6.5(lost 1st 3.5lbs)0 -

We like smoked mackerel, warmed up in a lidded frying pan, served with potatoes and salad or veg
More basic fish recipes here; I'll merge this later.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
Hi cooking-mama
Do you mind me asking how many you are cooking for? The reason I ask is I used the Tesco pack of fish (salmon/smoked haddock/white fish - I think it was cod) and whilst it doesn't look a lot there is plenty if you add some frozen peas and sweetcorn.
I did this on Wednesday and it made enough for my daughter and I (my daughter had seconds!). There was enough left over to make 4 individual fish pies which are now sat in the freezer for another night
All I did was poach the fish in a pint of milk with a bay leaf added. Once the fish was cooked (a few minutes) I removed it, along with the bay leaf. In another pan I melted a tbsp of flora and added a tbsp of flour. cooked this out for a minute and gradually added the milk back into the pan, stirring until thickened. To this I added a good handful of frozen peas, a drained can of sweetcorn and the cooked fish (previously I've added a handful of defrosted prawns but didnt have any this time) All I did then was put some of this mixture into an ovenproof dish and top with cheesy mash and popped it into the oven for 15-20 minutes.0 -

A small portion of white fish would be good
The cheesy mash was originally my daughters idea as we had some grated cheese to use up, I don't make it any other way now0 -
My son-in-law does a mean thai fish curry with rice and a packet of frozen white fish.He made it whilst we were on holiday.true he cheated a little bit as we were at a holiday cottage so he didn't have all his spices around him and so he had to use a Sharwoods jar of sauce but it was delish and fed three adults and one hollow legged 14 year old The little ones had pasta as they are not keen on curries.
or how about some kippers I know they are a bit old-fashioned for some, but my late husband loved them and always had brown bread and butter afterwards with them.0 -
Hiya
I want to start eating more fist and trying new fish.
I saw Jamie Oliver cooking a whole Mackerel and thought it looked lovely.
I've seen this
http://groceries.asda.com/asda-estore/catalog/sectionpagecontainer.jsp?aisleid=1214921924572&skuId=77238088&departmentid=1214921923769
but it's price per Kg and I have no idea how much a whole fish would weigh.
Has anyone bought whole fish before and if so any tips or ideas?Starting my DMP Journey.0 -
An ungutted adult mackerel would weigh about 300-500g. If you buy it from a supermarket it'll already have been gutted so it'll be a bit less than that. If you buy it already filleted, it'll cost more per kilo but of course there's no waste.
Personally I love fish on the bone, it's much tastier, but my OH complains so much about bones that it's not worth itI'd love to be able to throw a whole seabass or whatever on the barbecue though!

thanks
So is mackerel very boney then? If there no tricks to get rid of the bones?
I#d like to get my 6 year old eating more too. He loves fish already but we've only stuck to salmon, trout, cod, haddock and colley so far...Starting my DMP Journey.0
