I find mackerel nice and cheap and the staff will bone it for me if i ask them, Ilike it grilled with just salt n pepper and a squeeze of lemon
  • I shop at Morrisons to, and agree with McKneff.

If you can shop at a Morrisons, but don't feel confident to go to the fish counter they also sell the same fish pre-packed. It's just on a tray with cling film over it and a label saying what it, how much it cost etc.

They often reduce it too. I grab loads of it when reduced and sling it in the freezer.

Do you like white fish, like cod? It's really easy to cook - just pop a fillet (one per person) on a sheet of tinfoil, with some seasonings, like a slice of lemon or some fresh herbs (basil and parsley are both nice) and a splash of white wine or water - about 2tbsp. Wrap the foil up like a parcel, pop it on a baking sheet, and oven bake at 180c for 20 minutes or until it's cooked through. Serve with rice and some green veg - yum!

Grill some white fish for abut 10 minutes under the grill,
When cooked put some crushed crisps on the top, sprinkle with grated cheese and melt under the grill.
Chips or New potatoes and a bit of salad. Lovely
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

This can also be done in the steamer for about 15 mintes.
In the steamer you can do it in parcels of greaseproof paper or foil

  • We love fish pie. I get cod or haddock when it's on offer, or reduced, often just a small fillet or two, throw it in the freezer when I get home, and when I have a fair collection of white and smoked fish I'll get the pile out to defrost. Put potatoes on to boil for mash, nuke fish quickly in the microwave, take the skin off and chunk the fish, often add a tin or two of tuna chunks, or salmon, maybe prawns, have used smoked mackerel but not much as it's a bit overpowering. Add white sauce, or cheese sauce, maybe peas, maybe line the dish with tomatoes... pile fish mix into a big dish, top with mash, or we may have it with jacket potatoes or rice, or pasta shapes - can make a fishy lasagne, with pasta shells or twists instead of sheets - grate cheese over, sprinkle of paprika and / or chives, pop in hottish oven for about half an hour).

Mostly we have salmon fillets, again when on offer, baked quickly in buttered foil parcels with a squeeze of lemon, dash of olive oil, and fresh herbs. Great with new potatoes and peas, or broccoli, we also like spinach with fish.

I love kippers too, my mother used to jug them or fry them, I just do them in the microwave, nice with scrambled eggs.

Pilchards, tinned, in tomato sauce, are my favourite fish to eat with salad.

Actually I like those boil in the bag fish in butter sauce things, takes me back to broke but carefree bedsit days... sigh...

For those of you that use cod or haddock, give coley a try as it's a good deal cheaper. It looks an 'angin grey colour when raw but turns white on cooking. Good in fish pie. Wish I could get my lot to eat fish, fussy beggars.
  • I like smoked haddock steamed or wrapped in foil with a little butter and baked in the oven, served with a HM cheese sauce and green veg.

If you pick a quiet time, I'm sure the fish counter person in Sainsbury's/Morrisons would be more than pleased to advise you, if you explain you're a novice and you could ask them what's best value for money too!

Are you OK with bones/heads and tails? My OH likes the fish left whole, but the fishmonger will clean and fillet for you if you want leaving you with ready-to-cook and eat portions.

Alternatively, Sainsbury's basics range includes some frozen fillets of pollock, which is fine defrosted and used in fish pies/fishcakes or creamy sauces etc on it's own or for example with some salmon or prawn for a bit more interest!

Don't forget canned fish too which is good value for money and great in recipes. Smoked mackrel, tuna, salmon; pilchards or sardines too are great mashed up with a bit of butter and black pepper on toast, and then grilled till hot.

Individual portions of white fish and salmon fillets cook beautifully in a couple of minutes in the microwave.

I use a plastic lidded takeaway container and add seasoning/slice of lemon/splash of wine/ drop of milk/knob of butter/fresh herbs/sliced tomato depending on how I want the fish!

Don't overcook and leave to stand for a further couple of minutes, before serving.

    Simple!
