Parents being chased for a debt I paid

Options
Hi, i am looking for some help with a debt that that my parents are being chased for.

4 years ago my parents lost their jobs and couldnt pay the rent to their housing association. They where ashamed and didnt tell me for over a year until after they where evicted.

Once i found out i paid over £3500 (cant remember if debit card or cheque) to the housing association and they told me that was full settlement. This was in October 2016

Fast forward 2 1/2 years and my parents are being chased again for the same debt. From the same housing association. They have been private renters since eviction and I pay the rent so its not new rent.

I thought maybe its a mistake and called them. They have no record of my payment and told me that a bank statement wasnt proof of payment it was simply proof I payed somebody.

I have been informed its my responsibility to keep receipts and I needed to prove the money went into their account. I hold my hands up here maybe I dropped the ball by misplacing the receipt.

They even suggested I should pay again just to be sure and then they would investigate the first payment.

I also hold my hands up as I did get annoyed with the woman and tell her that they should also keep receipts.

I am just very annoyed i did the right thing and paid it and now I am made to feel like some sort of criminal.

So heres the question how do I prove the money went into their account other than a bank statement?

Sounds like they allocated it to the wrong account. Your bank should be able to tell you where the payment went. Once you show them that, it's up to them to find out what they did with it.

How did you make the payment? If by bank transfer then your bank should be able to confirm which account the money was sent to. If by card then the card issuer should be able to confirm the payee.

If you made the payment by cheque, you can request a copy of the cheque from your bank.

You may need to investigate your bank account to narrow down which method of payment you used.

If it was bank transfer, they may still be saved as a recipient which will provide you with the sort code, account number and reference used for the payment.

The payment should still be tracable from two and a half years ago.
I am on the same page as Fatbelly with this one, most likley allocated to the wrong account.
