Trainline wanting tickets posting to them but I must pay postage

Hi
Really not penny pinching but this is annoying me on a point of principle.
I booked trains last week on the hottest day of the year via The Trainline app. Needless to say the outbound was cancelled due heat and no further trains ran, same for the return journey later the same evening.
Ive applied to TL for a refund but they wont refund the tickets until they receive the paper tickets in the post and they advise sending them Recorded Delivery.
Why should I pay this? I dont want or need to send the tickets back, I did the whole transaction online, no trains ran afternoon evening so its not a grey area that I could have caught a later train etc.
If TL insist on wanting the tickets surely they should provide a return envelope or refund the postage cost?

If you bought your tickets elsewhere it would be up to you to return them if you wanted a refund e.g. by going back to the station, so I expect the same principle applies here.0

You are penny pinching. Buy a stamp and be done with it.0

You only need to return them if you ordered postal tickets.
Why should Trainline pay the cost for your choice of delivery.0 -

Correct if I bought them from a station I would expect to return them to a train station, however this was an online purchase so I would expect an online refund.0 -

No I didn’t order postal tickets, they were an online purchase and the only option given was to collect from a ticket machine, e-tickets or tickets within the app were not a choice.
Trainline should pay as they are wanting the tickets, my transaction and payment with them was online and I want the same for the refund, I’ve no desire to send them back.0 -

But you've got physical tickets, and those need to be returned. You don't need to use recorded delivery, if you want to save money just stick a second-class stamp on.
Which is a jolly good job as it hasn't existed for years.
OP, if you are sending tickets, you need to check whether they will be covered for loss in the RM system - and if they are not you need to decide if you accept the risk - a stamp or a secure method....
How much are they worth (or how much is the refund worth?)0 -

I know o have physical tickets but surely it should be suffice confirmation that they were not used due to no trains running at all that afternoon/evening between my points of travel.
I don’t need to but they advise to do this, of course Sod’s law is that they will not arrive with just a stamp on.0 -
