A gross overreaction with no means to rectify.

The request from Barclays for 'Proof of Funds' doesn't quite fit in with this scenario.
The original problem appears to have been the claim by the buyer that this was a scam. The buyer has now informed his bank that that was not the case. so that should be the end of it.
So where does the proof of funds fit in? Money laundering activity has never been alleged.

I have no way of knowing that that is the reason for the rejection - Barclays will not tell me.

@18cc - how else could I accept payment? Any scenario has potential to result in investigation

Paypal maybe, may have saved access to Barclays from being restricted.

You ask how you accept payments if you cannot bank transfer and the answer is cash only

yes I know it is silly that in this day and age the only safe way to sell something of value is via cash but since you don't know anything about the buyer or about where the money comes from or what their real motive is then you have no alternative but to use cash .

otherwise you run the very real risk having your bank account closed - as you have found out !

It is only my opinion of course ...
  • Then I’m guessing they suspected fraudulent activity.

And no, I don’t work for Barclays.

Is that really what you resort to?

    @Gary

I opened this thread in order to ask advice on how to proceed. You have taken it upon yourself to discredit my claim through your own ignorance. That was your decision. I have made the assumption you are fuelled with bias - why else would you form such a prejudice response?

Let us all remind ourselves of ‘£2500 for a used cooker?
    I think not.
Unless “cooker” is some sort of new cryptocurrency?’

Whilst you may live a world of cheap cookers there are others that are fortunate enough to afford luxury brands.

Please refrain from commenting on this thread any further - your input is not welcome.
  • LOL - you don’t know me.
And I can afford “luxury brands” thanks.

    Oh and public forum :)

Good to hear Gary - you must come from a very happy environment to troll public forums!

Can anyone give constructive advice please.

Just to clarify - you approached Barclays as a new customer solely to open an account to receive money from a household sale? Was this a savings or current account? Is there any reason you didn't just open a new account with your existing bank? I'm not saying that's definitely the reason your account was reviewed, but it's possibly puzzling behaviour for a new customer.

Oh yeah, advice - the standard, really! Complain, receive final decision, take to Ombudsman. Best of luck.
