I bet they are all cheap low end products.

Be that as it may its not the point. You said "It is practically impossible to buy a non smart TV". Even if they are "cheap low end products" they are available.

smart TV apps do eventually drop out of support and they will eventually stop working in that department but the rest of the TV will still work, its not like the entire Tv is useless just because Netflix can't be used anymore.

OP is looking at a 4K TV...All of which will be smart.
Might be better to up the size and budget a bit to get a good TV.
Some are suited to bright rooms others to darker environments. Type of viewing (Movies, Sport).
Spend some time trawling through reviews. Most people will tell you that the brand they own is the best, so better to compare something compiled by full time reviewers.
After 12 years, most will look good, whatever you buy.;)

That is really worth considering - do you think it is likely to happen?
Pretty sure the apps on my TV have stopped working. But it is pretty old now.

BBC have talked about requiring a login to use iplayer. So any implementations that don't implement that might stop. But I don't know details.

My OH seems to think that we will get a better wifi connection with a smart TV, but I would have thought that it wouldn't be any different to the firestick, which is sometimes a bit slow and hangs a bit. Surely that is all down to our wifi router and where it is located isn't it?

I guess the TV has more physical space to have a bigger internal antenna, so could get better reception.

Depends on whether the stalls are due to wifi, or further upstream (broadband connection / server).

    Go bigger if you can.

AVforums still the place to do research on what's out there

UHD fairly pointless at 49" but you will benefit from HDR and potentially a better colour range if chosen carefully.

Main consideration will be viewing angles required.

    I replaced my ~42" LG (720p) heavy LCD with a 50" LG (4K) recently.

Since they are trying to force you into a soundbar or other speak these days the size of each was pretty much the same. And since back facing speakers are no more? The down speakers at a 1/3 of the power are fine for me (never had on full anyway). Would always buy LG first for many reasons. Their cheap end is good. Their expensive end is excellent.

4K and 10bit are great also.

Was nothing wrong with the old TV but I can move this one on my own! And after 10 or more years I though why not! (it was also cheaper by far than the last one!).

Thank you all so much, I will go away and do some more research.

Don't really want anything larger than a 49" screen - we currently have a 37" and after our old conventional TV that seemed absolutely enormous.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

The bezel will be a lot thinner on the new TV more screen fits in the same space.

4k viewing distance at 50" is under 2m.

Those which distances are for 720 not 4k.

Don't look at new 2019 models look at last year's on sell out you will save money.
