Yeah - well done OP.... I work with families experiencing domestic violence and abuse and We are now talking about holding an event such as you are for 2008. we also have a Drop and Donate project which i set up last year which is great - we just put up a few flyers/posters around and about asking people for outgrown toys or books which we then give to the kids when they leave the refuge.... alot of the parents who leave the refuge moving to new accomodation are having to shell out alot of money for household basics and the kids have no toys - they have often only had time to pick a fave toy when fleeing their home. Sad but true. Oh well......great to hear a story such as yours OP. Cheered me up!Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0

Hi Bigmomma
Well done with your work and I hope you do have a Christmas Party in 2008. It is a lot of work but I'm sure we will all find out on Saturday just how worthwhile it is.
Your drop and donate project sounds fantastic and I am sure that all the families really appreciate the work you do. Life can be very hard for people at times and hopefully the support and guidance they receive will help them to more happier times.
A lot of the big companies in my local area are collecting toiletries for delivery to womens refuges and homeless hostels just before Christmas.
Just not to feel forgotten at Christmas hopefully will make this time of year a little easier to bear.
Keep up the good work - it's brilliant.0 -
why dont you start a donation/collection via paypal then everyone can help you to help others0

Utter tosh, the lady presented her purchase and paid the amount asked, what's the problem?.
It's great to hear she's had such good fortune in her endeavours to help others in need and wonderful to see so much support and advice offered in this thread.
I wish her and all those she is helping a very Happy Christmas0 -
It is now the night before the big party. Never mind the children being excited all the volunteers are too.
Three of us left work at 8.00 p.m. tonight after making up 100 goody bags consisting of things like play doh sets, upwords, jenga, crayola sticker sets, selection boxes, crisps, drinks, teddy bears, fuzzy felts, paper crafts, books, painting by numbers, caligraphy sets and the like.
Tomorrow we all have to be up early to transport everything to the venue and dress the room with Christmas trees, balloons, trimmings, the magician, disco, face painters and magician all have to set up before the children arrive at lunch time.
Am now at home enjoying a nice glass of wine and then I'm off to bed before the big day. Just hope everything goes well.0 -
Well done but i can't believe you spent £250 on selection boxes:eek:Darren0

I have just read this thread and must commend you on a wonderful job. I hope and pray that all goes well tomorrow and the children enjoy and revel in their day. These children deserve a good Christmas and will cherish it for a long long time.
You are giving them something brilliant which is not just materialistic but gives them a real purpose. It really brought a tear to my eye how you have devoted so much time and effort into this project with by the sound of it all your heart and soul.
Please let us know how it goes tomorrow and I hope that you have been an inspiration to us all.
I work for the Bristol Soup Run Trust and try to do my bit at Christmas but with 3 small children it is hard.
Sainsburys are a great supporter for us and donate alot of food to our cause. They have have a local community scheme and it may be worth next year speaking to them to get donations - it may just be with the party food but it all helps.
It makes me realise just how lucky my 3 children are.
Merry Christmas to everyone!:beer:0 -
Could have done. These selection boxes have 11 sweets in them. They are for a Christmas Party for 100 local disadvantaged children (some of whom live in refuges) and are not fortunate enough to have the 'traditional' Christmas enjoyed by many of us.
We have been fundraising all year for this and done well so are trying to push the boat out and give them a Christmas to remember.
Well done! Do a quick A4 flyer and tout it round the local shops. You will be surprised at the generosity of most people. it works really well if you can get TESCO to supply you freebies; usually the rest of them Morrisons, Sainsburys, Somerfield etc will die to get on the same band wagon particularly if you send them a nice personalised "thank you" letter for their bulletin boards.
P.S. dont try ASDA - they are WALMART and very unlikely to want to assist you in any way.
Good luck,Keep trying.........................what else is there to do?

I just wanted to wish you all the very best for the party today and to let others know that I have nominated rheme for post of the month, if you would like to follow suit by posting on this link
