If you go to Sainsburys Tescos Asda wherever tell them what you are doing. When I lived in Canada and we did anything like this the stores always gave us an extra 10% and if we had a raffle the stores would always donate lots of goods as long as you acknowledged them and sent them a thank you. We made loads of money for families on the poverty line from these donations. Had silent auctions from the donated stuff and made money to buy more stuff from the stores that gave us the items in the first place. Asda is a particularly good store for this or at least Walmart's in Canada was. It is really family orientated and community spirited. So next time say I am buying a 100 chockies, whateve,r for children in need can you give me any more discounts or throw anything in please and we will let everyone know that you did. taffy0

Hi Taffyscott
Many thanks for the tips will certainly do this. It is good to hear what other people have done when doing things like this it certainly gives us plenty of ideas.
We have made a point of sending thank you letters to everyone who has helped us and once the party is over we will send another telling them how much money we raised and what a success the party was.
We wrote to JK Rowling who very kindly donated a signed copy of her last Harry Potter book (the signed letter which goes with it gives the book its provenance). We held a silent auction with it and have raised a significant amount with that.0 -

That's good, so in the eyes of the law, you've just admitted to Theft! :T

BTW... Co-op are very community orientated, and they are always willing to donate items.... and if you have lots in the area you can get lots of goodies0

For God sake get into the spirit of things
I'm sure Mr Tesco can take the hit out of his few squillion pounds profit this year:rolleyes: anytime it happens to me (very rarely does) I just put an extra pound of 2 in the charity box and spread the luck;)

Well done it's a great feeling to know you've helped put a smile on a little face:T
At work we've been given a name and age of a child and we're all putting a sack of presents together for children in refuge's.
I'm sure if anyone wanted to do something to help, you could contact your local refuge and ask if theres anything you could donate0 -
Well done rheme for remembering the true meaning of christmas, this board seems to have become bogged down with people whos children "must have" nintendo wii's or their lives wont be worth living, and yet people forget that the gift of a selection box and a small gift is much more important to those in need, and the kids in need will probably remember your kindness much more than those kids who are bored with their wiis in a months time.
One other thing is I wish posters would get off wissychraddles back because they are right, in the eyes of the law this is shop lifting, for example steveymp claiming that tescos can afford the loss, well your right but with that justification we should all go shoplifting, however the op done the right thing by bringing it to the attention of the shop assistant.
all the best

Contacted my local library today who are delivering books and drawing materials as freebies next week. They also put me in touch with a department within the local council who are going to provide some freebies e.g. bookmarks and the like.
Thank you all for your tips and advice. It really is appreciated.0
