current account help

Can anyone help or advice please. Santander are now making 'online Banking' only accessible with a Mobile phone which I do not own. I have tried comparison sites for current accounts which do not require a mobile but have yet to find one where this is a criteria. A problem with Google is that it is hard to search for a negative - 'no mobile' generates a list of banks who only allow banking on a mobile. I have found a couple but only with a massive amount of effort - any suggestions, help appreciated - just to pre-empt i am rarely out the house and have no use for a mobile (I had one for 15 years) and giving it up was the main upside of being made redundant. Its an expensive item just to get codes from Santander. Codes sent to a landline would be great

You can get a phone for £20 less than that from Carphone Warehouse, top it up with a tenner & it will last for years.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Banks are implementing new security in response to PSDS2, in many different ways. Many of the banks which allow for verification by SMS also allow for codes to be sent by landline. Some examples are in the thread I've linked, otherwise you will need to investigate each bank individually.

Thanks - i thought i had made it as clear as possible that i will not be buying a phone at any price (and a contract or PAYG and faff about with yet another thing to recharge to run my bank account. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the UK who do not own a mobile - all my family for example. Even the mobile phone companies have advised that codes sent to mobile should not be considered safe. Halifax also send the code to a safe landline. I can assure you that buying a mobile is not beyond my capabilities just a waste of money and an annoyance. I wont be buying a helicopter either as i cannot fly one :)

Thanks Zanderman i had found one of the links - the other one was extremely useful - most grateful

By that analogy, are you implying that you don't know how to use a mobile phone?

It might be time to move your money under your mattress in that case - unfortunately people need to get with the changing and evolving times.

In general perhaps everybody should be thinking about how they are going to receive the confirmations required that all banks will be sending for either logging on to the account or for making purchases online by card.

options seem to be mobile phone ( either text or via the app installed on the phone) or via landline or via email

not all banks offer the email or landline option

there is nothing any of us can do to change the situation it's just a matter of deciding for yourself which of the options most suit you

Sorry forgot to add that another option may well be card reader and debit card to generate a logon or purchase code.

I believe but I'm not 100% certain that Nationwide for example plans to offer text email ,app and card reader options so quite a selection. other banks will vary
