Sacked!!

Options
Hi

So, I will try and make this as informative as I can...

I started working for a bank on 25th march 2019. Three month probation. This role was co sec administrator, and they agreed as part of the job that I would take my exams to become a qualified co sec.

three weeks into the job - I was creaking at the seams, the woman I worked for was a micro manager. I had no handover, no manual, no process notes. the network drives sooo compliated that it was clicking folders just to get to the document you wanted. documents saved in 3 / 4 different places, hard copy filing three times over. so much double counting, ive never seen anything like it. I sat with my head in my hands, as I felt like I was pushing sand uphill just getting to grips with where things were saved.

as you might imagine, there were lots of meetings to set up, which I did, but its been hard going. a lot to take on board. it was a team of 4 inc myself, and they had all been there for donkeys years, the woman who I replaced had also been there for years.... so they had no idea how to treat a new starter, nor a plan in pace for any form of training.

are you beginning to get the picture?

so my first month catch up - 100% all great - great feedback - im feeling happy
second month meeting - exactly the same - im feeling happy

third month meeting - im told im not getting things quick enough and they are exteniding my probation...

im feeling shocked - im feeling emotional, im just about to buy a house, im sorting my finances, and my pension... my world has just fallen apart.

3 weeks later, ive moved house, im travelling 50 miles to work, but thats ok...

BUT im feeling insecure in my role. this woman i work for shouts at ppl. thinks it ok to tell you that youve done something wrong when i havent. she is in way over her head in her role, the CEO and the CE doesnt like her.

i find out after she extended my probation (because a colleague told me) that she had told a colleague what she did to me. this person was in an admin role, and not HR. to me this is a breach of GDPR nd my line manager had no right in gossiping and divulging that information. at that point i knew that i had to get out of this company.

so last week i started my job hunt. i saw a role that i applied for - foolishly i completed th application form and sent it to my home email address - the email was quarantined.... :-( was what i thougght. and nothing more.

i also updated my linkedin profile to say that i was available for work.

to my shock, i was dragged into a meeting this monday, and told that i could not be trusted. that i had filled out an application for a job and didnt put my current role on the form. that toldme that they opened and read my email. they also told me that i hadnt updated my linkedin profile ro say where i was working, and that i now lived too far fom work to committ to my role. my reply was that i actually lived the furthest away and was still in the officee before my line manger - who complains that she needs to get three trains to work, and she lives 10 mins from me now. shes 30 mins late everyday, yet im 45 mins early....

she called a meeting, invited HR and badged the meeting as a catch up. i had no notice, no warning, nothing.

caught completely on the hop.

i was told that i could not be trusted. she told me that i needed a job closer to home! i told her that it was my human right to be able to look for a job. i put my hand up to the fact id used company email, and as we all know, who doesnt! i told her that she had broken my trust in disclosing personal information to a co-worker. sh badged it as gathering feedback, i challenged that by saying that you dont give infomation like that when gathering feedback - she didnt like being challenged, and HR cut the meeting.

they terminated my employment, said that i was a liar, and that i hadnt updated my cv and linkedin and it was a 5 minute job. i said that both my cv and linkedin profile are mine for personal use, nothing to do with the company, and that it is not a method of free advertiemnet for the company.i said that i had not compimised my role. i had done my job well and more, to which i was told that was questionable. i said that i was in a job with no training etc, and my line manager rolled her eyes and ended the meeting.

i was walked back to my desk, whils she stood over me huffing....

i handed my pass in and left.

im in complete shock that ive been treated this way..... and advice would be gratefully received. at best i deserved a slap on the wrist. but i feel they have broken GDPR becase they have gone through my email. that contaied a personal document, to my personal email account. not to mention discussing my probation extension, etc

They haven't 'broken' GDPR by looking at your email. You handed that information to them by loading it into their email system.

Focus your efforts on finding another role.

Your work email is not private, it’s company property.
Although they sound like a terrible company and you’re better off out of it.

Learn a lesson about respecting their resources (company email) and work out how you are going to present your sacking during your job hunt

I.e. you recognise you made a mistake and you’ve learnt a valuable lesson

I need to give some thought to this - at best its a slap on the wrist..... not a termination.

Surely as a potential Company Secretary you should be well aware of the legalities and where to look (rather than an internet forum) for legal advice.

I'm a mere untitled pleb in our organisation but even I know that the attitude you've shown after just 3 months (probation or not as it makes no difference) would lead you to a swift exit.

Correct your email address and CV and move on, only this time keeping your whistle clean for 2 years until you've earned some employment rights.

It's a termination if they consider it a termination.

So you're probation was extended without you knowing? Well how can you improve if you haven't been told how to and when by to? There's a case right there.

They can sack you for whatever reason they want as long as it isnt to do with any protected characteristics.

They can read your emails as its their property, they simply allow you to use it.

Telling someone in admin that you probation is extended is pretty moot. They can simply argue they asked admin to upate your employee file to state that your probation period was extended.

You dont want to be there. They dont want you there. Its probably just easier going.

Youve got such a little chance of doing something that will be of consequence to them.

does it warrant it? i felt like they just didnt want me there?

    no training etc.

the final straw was her discussing that she had extended me - that's so wrong. she should not have done that

as a qualified co sec she should have known that she was breaching personal information to a co worker
