What's the big problem with the M&S device? It works well enough, and it's no quicker with an app. Besides which not everyone wants their phones clogged up with banking apps just for very occasional use of an account.

And why can't HSBC allow both to be used on the same account?

The problem for me is that it is tiny and fiddly to use. My fingers aren't fat but I find using it very difficult and my eyes are weak, I can barely read it on a good day. Same with the First Direct one.

My phone is not clogged up - I made a folder and dragged all my bank apps into it. Easy.

It appears that the above email is saying that the app can be used for generating codes but the clear steer at https://bank.marksandspencer.com/digital-changes/ is that those who choose not to use the app can continue to use the device:
Current account customers who use a physical M&S PASS but don't have the app can carry on using it. However, if you want, you will be able to download the app and replace your physical M&S PASS with a Digital M&S PASS.

I'm not meaning just the icons - that's not the problem. It's the impact of large numbers of largely unnecessary apps on the phone's performance.

Some of us have a large number of accounts.

I bet you I can place my fingerprint on my phone's sensor and generate a code in the app quicker than you can hold the power button for a few seconds, key in your PIN and press the power button again to generate a code :D

I have nine different bank current account apps on my phone with at least three others not. Performance hasn't been a problem.

If you clear out background usage / closed apps then performance should not suffer. Just because you close down apps from your view it doesn't mean that they are no longer active.

I'm sure you can, and I do use banking apps. But I don't want my phone's memory clogged with apps like this one that I'd use only once every couple of months. Too many accounts - that's the problem. And that's where the soon-to-be redundant First Direct Internet Banking Plus scored.

Some consolidation required, I think, but that will result in a loss of interest.

Yes, consolidation is good. Especially when banks like Santander pay you handsomely to do so, perhaps there will be another such opportunity some day.

M&S have a much larger device which you can request. (it also speaks the numbers of the generated code) Very much easier to use

From an email received from M&S today. AFAIC, the planned changes can't come soon enough. I hate their hideous physical secure key gadget with a vengeance.

How come HSBC will still allow you to use their app with a physical secure key - or so we assume.

Aren't they all part of the same family?

I am a little wary about app reliance - if you lose your physical key you can get a new one from an HSBC or M&S branch same day but it could be a while before people get a new phone and SIM if theirs is lost or stolen.

Shame they can't allow both physical and digital for those who wish it?
  • Well Nationwide seem to be on the ball with this - just got my first text code for an online order using their credit card.
    Transaction went through smoothly.
