It isn't exactly hard to use an app to check your balance. In fact, it takes me a few seconds now to do it, and I don't even have to go anywhere near my laptop to do it. A simple "Siri, open Santander", or "Siri, open Barclays" etc, and a look at my phone is all I need now to log in. Obviously, I need a smartphone for starters - but I have one of those anyway as there are dozens of reasons why I have one, despite being of near dinosaur age now (in fact, getting older is even more reason for me to have a smartphone as I only need to look after one gadget now, as opposed to a dumb phone, a calendar, a pen, a diary, a phone directory, a step counter, a radio, a wallet bulging with debit, credit and loyalty cards, a camera, an alarm, a stopwatch etc etc etc)

You don't need to tell me about people having several accounts. I used to have nearly 3 dozens current accounts, and a similar number of savings accounts. The only reason I have fewer accounts now is that drop of current account interest rates and a shrinking number of good regular savers. I appreciate it could be a little bit more difficult for those who refuse to use a smartphone but that is their choice, and my view is that they are making their lives unnecessarily difficult for themselves. I also appreciate that their view varies with mine, and that is fine, too. There alternatives for those who choose not to adopt modern technology.

Your last paragraph about not embracing modern is bull.
I doubt you really understand the impact that this will have on the elderly - but that another matter.
Just like Facebook, this plays right into the hands of government. Facebook was the best thing to happen in order for the government to accumulate data.
All the changes to the banking will allow governments to accumulate data behind the scenes without our knowledge or for those of us who are aware of how governments works, do not want them them to have any more data on us.
I am not surprised at your answer, for someone who use to have over 3 dozens current accounts, and a similar number of savings account it says a lot about your financial savviness.

Why not fingerprint readers for PCs?

You'd no doubt get the same objections from the hardcore objectors: "my PC doesn't have a fingerprint reader. Nor do I need one", or "Government surveillance blah blah" etc etc.

My thinking was that they'd be provided by the banks - like the card readers. Simple, quick, and relatively cheap in bulk supply.

    Works very well with smartphones.

A lot of things that work well on phones wouldn't be secure on PCs because it's far far easier to install whatever software you like on your PC. Software that could effectively spoof the response from something like a fingerprint reader.

From an email received from M&S today. AFAIC, the planned changes can't come soon enough. I hate their hideous physical secure key gadget with a vengeance.

You currently use the M&S PASS (the small calculator-like device) to generate a security code to access and use Internet Banking. But the good news is, you’ll soon be able to use the M&S Banking App to generate this code instead.

The M&S Banking App will be updated later this year to include a new feature called a ‘Digital M&S PASS’, which is the functionality that will enable you to generate your security code.

Please note that when the app is updated to include the Digital M&S PASS, you will no longer be able to use the physical M&S PASS that you currently use if you want to continue to use the app. We’ll let you know when this happens and what you’ll need to do, but until then, carry on using your physical M&S PASS to generate your security code as usual.

    Me too

I think we should have a celebratory 'burn the detestable M&S Pass' ceremony. Not very eco friendly, but very satifying:D

What's the big problem with the M&S device? It works well enough, and it's no quicker with an app. Besides which not everyone wants their phones clogged up with banking apps just for very occasional use of an account.

And why can't HSBC allow both to be used on the same account?
