Deressed and feeling of little worth.

Flossy, thanks for the advice, though I'm sure of where I want to go now. I have no interest (or experience) in working in anything other than IT or the Civil Service (which is where I want to be by this time next year). I don't want to work for any US firms (hate the whole Corporate attitude and doing everything in dollars, even when they are trading \dealing with UK based customers). I am doing some voluntary work, but it's hard not to feel like it's a time filler. I enjoy it but it doesn't pay the mortgage!
I know I have along way to go - and possibly this is the very worst time to not have a job, tbh I'm dreading Christmas this year, although trying to keep a brave face on things.0 -

Thats the hardest part dealt with. This time next year you'll be offering advice to others on here about how to pick themselves up from feelings of no self worth. I hope you and your family have a peaceful Christmas.0 -
Phirefly, I certainly hope so! OH keeps telling me it will happen (she's always right funnily enough!), but it just seems so far away that sometimes I just want to give up; on looking for a job, life everything. Grrr, I've just been to the gym - and am feeling okay about things now. But sometimes it's so hard to imagine getting back to where I was before. But as you say knowing is 90% of the battle won.
As strange as it may seem, I'm looking forward to a quieter Christmas this year- when I worked in London - December was just one long blur of late nights, parties and hangovers, all the while buying crap that i neither wanted or could really afford. And while I miss the parties and drinks after work, I don't think I'm going to miss the shopping scrum and the attitude of "I must buy more\bigger\expensive, etc, etc to validate me as a successful person".
And to you and all the posters on this thread I hope everyone has a peaceful Christmas.
Can you believe it though? All the music channels have already started playing Christmas music! Couldn't believe last night when flicking after Top Gear that Wizzard were being played on VH1!0 -
Can I ask if you have updated your IT skills recently? It's only because in the nature of my job I meet people who have been made redundant after years in IT, and they find that the only way BACK into the Industry is to update their quals as the Industry changes so quickly.0

Joe, I am studying fro some certs; MCDST, MCP, MCSE) in that order. Pretty much from the MCDST and MCP i know, as my background is in desktop, 1st 2nd line support. Obviously it's better to have a piece of paper to PROVE that you know it!! Will be doing my MCSE's later. Tried a boot camp one and wished I hadn't! Too much money and I failed all the exams I took (70-270, 70-290). I'll be honest my last employer has pretty much made me not want to work in IT anymore, right now I have zero interest in working in IT. As well as putting me off from working in IT they also destroyed my confidence before forcing me to take redundancy. And for that I hate them!
As I've posted previously All I want to do now is go back into the Civil Service and forget IT as a career. But being realistic, I will at least keep trying to get my certs as there's more chance of work in IT than the CS right now.0 -
Hey London-Exile, well done you! You're sounding angry, which is a good thing! The hardest bit is when you have in your heart agreed with the negativity and let it take away your drive. Now you just need to harness the anger and you'll soon be back where you want to be. it's so good to hear the increased energy in your postings.
One idea if it's worth it before you aim to move back to the smoke, contact ALL local colleges and any universities and find out about their vacancies. They employ such a wide range of skills and experience that you may apply for one post and get offered another. That's what I experienced anyway! Because it's in academia there seems to be more mental stimulation and I just quite frankly feel GOOD going on to Campus and feeling a part of the buzz. If I could get more hours I would! As to acquiring other skills, that's what the voluntary work is for! Consider everything! well done on progress so far, keep up the good work.x :T0 -
Cheers! Just had a heads up that a job in the Civil Service has come up thats pretty much bang on what I was doing before and what I would like to do again. So have just bashed out an appo. I should at least *hoping* get an interview.................0

Wow, that's great. Best of luck. See the power of positive thinking, the Universe responded. :T0

Cheers! The closing date is the 10th so knowing the CS, probably won't hear whether I've been sifted for interview until the New Year! But there does seem to be an abundance of CS jobs coming up on the CSRG. The law of averages would suggest that eventually one application will pay off!0
