Our wine budget is strictly Aldi!! We pay approx £5 per bottle.
Today was the Hardy's Chapter & Verse Merlot. We make it last 2 days.
Our other favourites are the Makaraka Sauvignon Blanc, and the Castellore Prosecco (orange label).
We only have a bottle a week, on average, so we're not a couple of lushes!! (honest!!)
A better option than Aldi is to buy in bulk at Sainsburys when they have 25% off which is usually around Xmas, Easter and August. The minimum spend is 5 quid a bottle and six bottles. I usually buy 30 or 36 bottles (the max) and that lasts for months at one bottle a week. At a big Sainsburys there's a lot of wine choice too.0 -

May I suggest you raise the bar a little for their "Exquisite Argentinian Malbec" (£5.99). A *very* nice taste!
We have managed to win about a dozen bottles of red this year from coming second in our local in our weekly pub quiz.....not a bad taste, but not the Malbec.....
Of course first prize is MONEY!
(#WeSpendMoreThanThatOnAlcohol-NotAMoneysavingSuggestion!)
I think we have had that one before, and I think it was nice, but we've gone onto the Merlot (can't remember why, DH usually picks the wines)JoeEngland wrote: »A better option than Aldi is to buy in bulk at Sainsburys when they have 25% off which is usually around Xmas, Easter and August. To be honest, I can't be bothered with that. We'd have to try before we buy, and Sainsbury's is a bit out of our way, just to pop in and buy a few random bottles at full price to test first. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! We just drop a bottle or two into our trolley each week.Aldi has a nice fleurie at the moment bit it is a little over yoru budget. We dont have Aldi here, so i ordered a case of the fleurie- will be my OH christmas present.
We have wine with dinner 5 nights a week. Not quite lushes as we dont drink for 2 days lol.
I'm not sure we've tried the Fleurie, but I have heard of it. What grape(s) is that?
We don't have a BUDGET as such, it's more a case of we've tried a few over the years, and those bottles happen to be the ones we liked. I'm the first to admit i'm no wine connoisseur!!
Our total Grocery shopping comes to about £215 per month on average, including the wine. We did a BIG shop this week, and still that only came to £67!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I think I want to shoot whoever it was that coined the phrase "A problem shared is a problem halved"
Well, that's as maybe for the person doing the "Sharing", but spare a thought for the person you've unloaded your baggage onto.

It certainly never works in a project consortium (the epitome of problem sharing)!
Where other, more appropriate phrases, come into play such as:
"Herding cats!"
"Left-hand doesn't know what right-hand is doing!"
"Pointless waste of space!" etc.

I'm not sure we've tried the Fleurie, but I have heard of it. What grape(s) is that?
Fleurie is one of the beaujolais cru wines - it is made from the Gamay grape. It is very nice (along with other beaujolais cru wines like Brouilly and Morgons) - well worth buying when they are on offer.
We came back with a case of award winning french wines that included Brouilly and Morgons from our recent visit to our friends in France - supermarket wines there for around €4.95 that we would have expected to pay £11 or £12 for here - so premium supermarket quality. Unfortunately the fuel and road tolls meant they were not such a bargain all in all but it was all about visiting good friends and spending time with them.Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far

I do exactly the same. Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva sold there for £10 reduced to £8 and with the 25% only £6. I drink 2 bottles a week, but use the "may reduce cholesterol levels" as a good excuse. BTW the campaign occurs every 6 weeks these days - 24th is the next.0 -
Maybe I should rename my thread Alcohol and Running Anonymous.
It's not all I do honest....but running does give me an excuse to have a drink!!! (and an extra biscuit)
A unit of alcohol is approx 100 calories, which equates to roughly a mile on foot (running or walking)
Most wines are actually nearer 10 units per bottle (rather than the 6 you might think), so a large glass (250ml) is about 330 calories.
So about a "Park Run's" worth!!!!
Get in!!!:beer:How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0
