That's exactly what i need!!! I'd prefer heated water though.
You can get "endless" pools with a current you swim against, that would fit in a garage...but DH wouldn't give up his man cave! How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I've thought about making a little sauna at home. The shed and greenhouse built by the previous owners of our house are on their last legs so i'm planning on building a new storage come garden room at some point and putting a sauna in there is something i need to give serious thought to.
On the gym thing I've been very grateful this last few weeks that I made the decision 10 years ago to invest £500 on weights and a squat rack for a home gym. On the whole I think commercial gyms are vastly overpriced and I've long questioned the logic of using running machines. Perhaps the current situation will convert a few more people into the benefits of exercising at home and outside.0 -
TBH when I say gym, it's really just the pool, I very rarely actually use the gym bit. It's handy though if you have a niggle and want to avoid the high impact of running, whilst still getting a good cardio workout (cross trainer/rower)
I don't have a membership, been using Hussle, which I've found suited my needs, especially when only swimming once a week.
As you may recall, I have a council outdoor gym near me...but obviously that's out of bounds at the moment! I shall be using that again when I can. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Oh, and I've pressed "go" on the ISA investment too!! (blue haired eek)How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1

I don't have any experience of Hussle but it seems a good idea.
Yes, sorry for my total generalisation, swimming is possibly a gym / leisure centre only option. Well unless you like the idea of wild swimming too? I quite fancy that myself, apparently the cold exposure has remarkable health benefits.1 -

OMG I couldn't do open water swimming. I have to be able to see the bottom (and touch it preferably) and if something touched me I'd freak out!!
I'm a "strong" swimmer, but by no means a confident one!

Its funny you mention that. I listen to the "Feel better, live more" podcast and Rangan Chatterjee, the chap that produces it, talked about his experience of this. He took part in his first open water swim last year and discusses the mental side of being out of your depth and a long way from the shore. Even though the use of safety boats etc makes it relatively safe I can see how panic could easily develop.
I think I'd have to start off small... a cold shower maybe! LOL1 -
I have a friend who is an open water swimming devotee - she swam throughout the winter without neoprene doing something called the polar bear challenge. Totally barking if you ask me. She did drag us into some fairy pools in Snowdonia last summer - so, so cold and I did not stay in long. Ticked the box and moved on!!!
I have a turbo trainer but not yet tried using it - we are going to try it with OH's bike which will fit him and DD. I have much longer legs so it might just be too small for me and I can't see us faffing about between 2 bikes. DD is running 5k or doing a yoga/core/pilates video each day but then she has nothing else to do now A levels have gone phut. I am walking the dog 3 miles each morning but that is nearly it - I have managed 1 run a week so far but have done a lot of gardening at weekends.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

My turbo trainer has a smallish mountain bike on it with road tyres and it's OK for me (6ft) and Mrs S (5ft 2). I have to raise the seat up about as far as it will go, which makes the bars a bit lower than the seat but I'm OK with that.
If I'm going to deliberately immerse myself I like both water and air to be close to body temperature0 -

Maybe I'll just run the shower hot and sit on the loo....similar effect
Oh to be able to go to the gym/spa/pool again.
FYI, our spa doesn’t smell at all “chemically”. I think public ones load them up with chlorine because of the higher risk of shared bugs.....
Over the past 2-3 weeks, we keep an eye on the water state once a day....up or down the pH levels a little, usually add one or two “sparkle tabs” (essentially chlorine) 30mins before we hop in, and there is no smell when we get in
& we aren’t “spa people” generally....don’t spend more than 30-45mins in it.....but it has been an absolute star over this lockdown, lovely to hop in mid or late afternoon, a couple of times later at night with the stars above! Even if we never use it again after this summer, worth every penny!
& yes.....this is going to be one long haul of a year......stay safe, all!
Certainly been well used over the last few weeks, and as overall spending is down dramatically we can even afford the increased electric cost.3
