Quick update:
Negotiated with Howdens, and they agreed to price match the quote MarcTJTD provided, and gave me a refund of £530!
Goes to prove perseverance is the key. MASSIVE thanks to MarcTJTD, couldn't have done it without you mate.
I guess the moral of the story is never accept Howdens first quote, and always get them to price match a competitor.0 -
No bother mate.0

We got our DIY Kitchen delivered the other day.
All good so far. Fitter is impressed with quality.
I couldn't stand the howdens magical pricing policy otherwise I would have used them.
Not sure how the price I paid for mine compares but in total there were 52 items and the kitchen is 5m by 3m. Came to £5600.0 -

What points I should have in mind.

Contact one of the major suppliers that offer free home measurements and design such as Wickes, Wren or Howdens .. get them to come out and design the kitchen that you're happy with and then take the quote to your local independents and ask what they can offer to win your business.
And make sure that you're comparing like-for-like products.
I can't honestly count the number of times one of my customers has come to me with a cheaper "comparison quote" from Howdens where they're trying to pass off a 16mm chipboard vinyl-wrapped, ABS edged greenwich gloss door as being equal to an 18mm MDF painted and lacquered door.
If you're shopping for a kitchen and want to be informed, it pays to do a bit of research into what quality looks like with a kitchen door.
Have a budget in mind and be realistic. If you've £25k to spend, happy days, go nuts .. but if you're looking to put a new kitchen in on a £3k budget, no amounts of haggling will get you top end cabinetry/worktops/appliances.1
