We all make mistakes at times (or so I've been told... ), and that includes mistakes dealing with other peoples' mistakes. It does sound like this may have been one of those second times.

End of the day, no-one was hurt, your insurance won't be affected much by it if your record is otherwise clean, and - because of your comment above - I'd lay odds that you'll learn from this and won't get caught out by similar numpties in future.
