Is this just some kind of cruel way to kill fish? How many are you planning on getting through before you decide it's time to learn the fishkeeping basics.

There's load on info of the web. Please don;t get/kill any more fish until you understand what you're doing.

Water changes, water changes and water changes.....if you don't know how to fishless cycle a tank, or have no idea what I'm talking about then please Google it...

fwiw letting water sit doesn't always get rid of the chlorine...most water providers now use chloramine which doesn't outgas, so please use a water dechlorinator...a cheap one that makes no other claims is fine. If you can find it in your local pet store, a company called Seachem make 'Prime' which locks up the fish's waste(ammonia) for abit, making the fish more comfortable.

Keep up with the water changes- about 30% every day for a week, then evey second day the second week and so on, and your fish may survive.

I'd recommend joining a fish forum too, for more specific advice.

Sorry to hear your are having problems. I thought I should let you know my daughter was given two golfish by a friend for her 17th birthday but very soon one died. Now when she went off to university her brother was very happy to look after the fish and we went along to the pet shop to buy another to keep it company. However we were advised by the lovely girl in the shop that goldfish tend to last longer by themselves otherwise you would need a really good sized tank.
I look forward to hearing your reports please keep us up to date.

Argh! Please read some decent advise about looking after fish. You can't just keep buying them.. poor things. We've had a few deaths over the years and it's inevitable but they can live for years if you're careful.

Don't just put lots of fish in a tank. You should introduce them slowly so the ammonia/nitrates levels can adjust.

Two or three flakes per fish, every other day.

I'm new at keeping fish, 6 months in and have had no problems so far thankfully. I realised fairly early on that I was feeding them too much as the water got dirty very quickly so gradually reduced the amount I was giving them.

I now feed my 3 fish a pinch (probably about 10-12 flakes) twice a day, is this too much then??

Another question, one of the fish has grown absolutely huge, I have had to buy a larger net as I'm sure he wouldn't fit into a small one and I don't want to hurt him. The other 2 are growing but not at such a pace, is he eating all the food and leaving nothing for the others and will he stop growing?

I do a half water change every other month and a full tank change every 4- months.

Crikey I'm doing that every week... am I in overkill mode? :D

On the plus side I haven't lost a fish yet... actually I tell a lie... last week I accidentally sucked a baby up with the gravel filter.... rescued him and put him back but was floating half an hour later

Is there a trick for not hoovering up teeny weeny babies with the gravel cleaner? I've actually re-homed daddy platy now, his virility was threatening my perfectly balanced eco-system!, but supposedly mama platies can keep reproducing without him for a while
  • Hello All!

I just thought I would see if I could rally up all the fishkeepers on this forum. The same way i tried to rally up all the rockers! It would be nice to see if we have a sub-community...

I keep tropical freshwater fishes: I have a 1mx50cmx40cm main tank and a little 35 litres corner quarantine tank. I am the proud owner of a sailfin leopard pleco who is not very sociable, a bristlenose pleco who hides all the time, some kuhli pango loaches, a big gender confused angelfish (apparently female but thinking there was a male in the tank and laying eggs), some platies who have given us babies, 2 clown loaches, some different types of danios (hi-fin zebra, glowlight, pearl) and some blue-king tetras.

We also keep some otocinclus(es) in the quarantine tank to keep it algae free.

We rescued our tank and never met the original owner. There used to be a few cardinal tetras, and a lot more blue king tetras that died there as a result of neglect before the rescue and stress due to the move.

We have recently lost a few of our khulis and our only fighter: we think this was due to old age since they came with the rescue. the original receipt for the tank was 2000, so these fishes were possibly quite old.

My next additions will be some Killifish (five-lined and australe) ordered off the net, then some dwarf gouramis, maybe a fighter, and a big shoal of cardinal and neon tetras. After that, the quarantine tank will be mainly occupied by the otos and a few guppies possibly.

    What about you?

Only kidding. I do have two goldfish in a tank, but these belong to my young daughter - her first pets, although I look after them.

I also keep marine fish for myself with a combination of coral and shrimps, some tangs and some inverts amongst the collection.

You've got yourself a good collection of fish going on there haven't you. I tried a tropical tank some years ago but all the fish just kept hiding and whenever people came to visit they'd love to admire my 'empty' tank of water and think I was mad - at least coral moves a bit in the water flow and the shrimps are always busy so the tank looks interesting when the fish are doing their usual disappearing tricks.

  • We used to keep a very large koi pond. I know how to sort out filters and plumbing and most things to do with keeping fish healthy. In those days I lived in a house with sveral acres and also had horses and a dog and children at home. Now nothing/nobody depends on me being around so husband and I can travel.
