Hi,
Looking for some advice....we had storage heaters fitted 12 months ago. We were told we could leave them on according to our Economy 7 tariff thing and that they were energy saving (by the installer/electrician) Anyway...a year later and we have a HUGE electricity bill for £2k all of which from entered readings.
Eon have been really good and they have spoken to me a number of times as we were concerned there was something wrong (we have a very very small two bedroom flat) However, it looks likeit's correct.
What they are saying now is they want a direct debit of 500 p/m which is more than my rent...! I understand why of course....The advice I'm after is - how long a period can I negotiate spreading the bill over? Does any one have any ideas? I've no complaints about the way they have handled it really I just want to know what to expect before I speak to them? Can they make me do the 500 p/m? They've already emailed me and said they have changed my direct debit amount from the 80 I pay to 500....?
Thanks in advance!

Have you been paying £80 a month over the last year as this would mean you've used £3000 to be left with a balance of £3k.
Have you made sure the readings aren't being mixed up on your bills and are you definitely on E7. What are the unit rates on your bill.
How many storage heaters do you have, how large are they i.e. 3.4kW and what make are they.0 -
Also what is your actual usage over the last 12 months.0
-
Have you ever given Eon any meter readings - it may be once they've got some actual readings they might owe you.
Are you sure these are storage heaters not the ones filled with the magic fairy dust that cost a fortune to instal (and to run)Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

Speak to Eon
If, having paid £80pm for 12 months (=£960), you are now in debit by £2k, that means you should have been paying £2960pa (£246.67pm)
So you've been paying £166.67pm too little.
The supplier should allow you to repay the balance owed over the period it accumulated, 12m
So, you should ask them to collect just £413.34 pm (£246.67 + £166.67) for the next 12 months, then drop your payments back down to £246.67pm
This assumes no price changes or changes in level of consumption.
So best to keep your eye on both, and keep the supplier updated with regular meter reads, so you don't get hit with another ssurprise debit balance 12m down the line.0 -
Small 2 bed flat ?
If this is in a block with all the meters housed in a service cupboard, there is the possibility that both you and Eon are looking at the wrong meter, and/or the meter is serving more than just your flat.
If it is a service cupboard set up, check the meter by turning OFF all appliances including the Fridge - Then whilst you watch the meter which should be at a dead stop., have a mate with a mobile phone in the flat turn the kettle ON and OFF to your order - The meter should react exactly in synch to your orders, if it doesn't, it's not your meter0 -
Thanks for the replies!
So, it's a two bedroom flat above a shop. Eon have been helpful. They did a load test to confirm it is our supply...it is.
We had five new heaters fitted. They are the top that come on at night and store the heat on concrete within the heater which releases throughout the door. I'm 99% sure this is the problem...we were told by the electrician and landlord that they were energy saving and what have you. It would appear that they are in fact very expensive!!
So I can arrange to pay over 12 months? I can handle that...just about! As I say, Eon have been fine I just wanted to seek help in the hope I didn't have to pay so much so quickly!0 -
5 heaters in a 2 bed flat looks over the top
So - if these are say 3kw units and there is a immersion heater as well they will charge up in 3 hours or less = 5 x 3kw x 3hrs plus w/h x 3kw x 3hrs = 54 units a night at say 12p is £6 a night and £180 a month during the winter.
Please post your meter readings
Look at your manual and see how to set them.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
Hopefully you are on an Economy 7 tariff with most of your units being used on the cheaper night time rate?0
-
Yeah. Foolish on our part really. We just went with what the electrician said...!
Would my meter readings be on my account online?0 -
Yes on your online account - please include any letter A,E or CNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
