Cash Machine Robbed Me Of £140!!

Advice please from you knowledgable people,
My wife went to an ATM (not her own bank) and withdrew £200, unfortunately the machine started making a noise and subsequently only despatched £60!!
She hadn't asked for a receipt and so started panicking.
She then informed the lady behind and the lady carried out her transaction with no problems (and without an extra £140 thrown in!)
Then she dashed to another ATM to check her balance, and lo and behold there was £200 deducted when in fact she had only received £60!!
As it's sunday and the banks and helplines are closed, we will have to wait until monday to try and resolve the matter.
The question is whether they will believe my wife as she has no proof, and is there any measures in place to check this .
I just wondered if any of you out there had any similiar experiences and how you dealt with them, and what are her rights against her word and that of a faulty machine!
Hope you can help, thanks in anticipation.

My daughter had something similiar happen a year or so ago. She just had to fill in a form from her bank and after they'd checked the machine she had the missing money refunded. Took a week or two I think.

Inform her bank first thing in the morning.

The ATM owners will know that they've got £140 that belongs to somebody - and they might suspect it is your wife.

You should get the money back easily enough.

The fact the account registers £200 withdrawn is not linked to the physical machine and what it dispensed. Equally, if the machine had dispensed her £400 in error her account would only be showing £200.

    hi,
I used to work at a bank, the cash machine keeps a log, (like a till roll), of all the card numbers and what the machine did for each person.
The machine will have recorded that there was a problem and so should have an error code when it gets filled on Monday.
Inform your wife's bank on mOnday morning, but the fact that she has no recipt is not a problem.

hope this puts your mind at ease.

Yes it does and thank you.
As you worked in a bank, could you tell me (as I assume is correct) that there must be a record of what is put in and withdrawn from the atm ,and any over or shortfall will confirm a fault with the atm?
Also one of the notes which she received was folded over, could this be the cause of the problem??
  • the ATM usually 'senses' that a problem has occured and if this coincides with the time of your transaction there won't be a problem.

As someone else said, if the till balance of the ATM differs by £140 then obviously something went wrong. I wouldn't worry ... but let me know if it doesn't happen.

I have done my time as a cashpoint clerk and the cashpoints usually know when an error has happened and it is recorded.

Hopefully, all that has happened here is the earmark for the original request was still showing (as it was not a working day) and the earmark will correct itself next working day.

The cashpoints are balanced so errors can be verified against the audit trail.

Not recommended - calm and rational is usually far more effective;)
