Economy 10 meter change Eon

It's possible that they were more cautious previously? Might make sense if the tariff had heaters charging during the early evening and afternoon when people would be more likely to running other heavy loads like cookers or electric showers at the same time?
Or maybe it was originally planned as 2 × 60 amp or 2 × 80 amp supplies?
Just guessing, though!0 -
We had a lot of work done scones, with an extension and storage heaters - I can remember the chap coming out from the electricity board to look at changing the meter to economy 7 (they used to send someone out to look before they did anything back then) and he said we needed a bigger supply - they then came and put in what we have now two phases, one 60 amp and one 100 amp fuse. We didn't change to economy 10 until about 15 years ago so it was originally based on the economy 7 supply.
I know it will all sort itself out in the wash and if we keep the storage heaters it looks like we are going to have to go back to economy 7 - but it provides nowhere near the heating when you need it like economy 10 does so we are going to be turning on some form of extra heating in the evening like we used to.0 -
Hi Malc
Thank you for your detailed reply. That clarifies a lot of our confusion. The economy ten option would be perfect for us if it weren't for the 56% price hike ! We already use the heating as sparingly as possible. We only have storage heaters so never use higher rate electricity for heating. I see we will gain a tiny bit by having the off peak electricity available in the two day time slots, for cooking and washing machines. But the 30% price increase in the day time units will more than make up for that.
We are afraid of signing up for the Economy 7 as we will lose the afternoon boost. One of us is 82 years old, and home most days. We cannot risk not being able to keep warm. Anyway the Economy 7 prices we are being offered are also a huge price increase. I know we can shop around, and we would certainly have to. But what would be the cost of going back to Economy 10 if we wanted to ? Would Eon even let us go back (I don't think it is available to new customers) ?
I know we have until September to decide what to do. I assume we could leave Eon now, and keep the existing meter ? Eon told us that Offgen are making all companies change to simpler meters but we can find no evidence of that.
Price comparison sites are showing we would save about £500 per year by leaving Eon and buying Economy 7 elsewhere. What is the reason for such enormous price rises from Eon ?
Hello Sandydog and glad I was able to give some clarification.
I do understand the price difference between what you're paying now and the Economy 10 rates is a shock. Economy 7 meters also work with storage heaters. As you say, you would lose the cheaper boosts to top up the heating. This could still be done manually although at higher rates. The benefit of Economy 7 is you'll be able to take advantage of better prices both with us and with the other suppliers.
There's no charge to go from your current metering to Economy 7/10 or single rate. Should you want to change back to another type of meter, there would be a charge for this. Currently, this is £64.76 including VAT. It would also depend on what metering is available at the time. At the moment, Economy 10 meters are available. I don't know what the situation will be further down the line.
Totally take on board your concerns about prices and I've reported back to our management on this. Although we've no say in pricing and tariffs, we're always happy to let those who make the business decisions know what impact they're having.

Thanks Malc
The economy 7 tariff Eon offered us was also a huge price hike (about 42%). Also, I do not know how we could boost the heating if we were on E7. The storage heaters have no power to them except in the cheap rate periods, neither does the immersion heater,
We have since found that much better E7 tariffs do exist with Eon but only for new customers. If I put our details in Uswitch but say I am with another provider these appear. Otherwise they are not in the search results.
I don't think much of existing customers being treated as second class.
Anyway thanks for your help, and for passing on our concerns with the tariff changes

No worries Sandydog. Always happy to feedback. I've also done this with your comments about the tariffs for new customers you saw on uSwitch.
As well as the Price Comparison sites, there are other tariffs available on our website that are more competitive than Economy 10.
If you haven't already, pop your usage in kWh on to the Price Comparison sites to see what else is available in the market.
Thanks Sandydog and have a good weekend.

I also received the letter from Eon. I currently have the two meters - one for my storage heaters that comes on for a few hours over the course of 24 hours. I have been switched to a few different tariffs over they years with eon and to be honest I've not needed to do anything and the price hasn't really changed too much. I was currently on their RHT plan for the storage heater meter and the energy plan for the rest. They are telling me all my electric will now be on the energy plan tariff which even they admitted would be a considerable amount more to pay. They never mentioned anything to do with a change of meter systems at all. Eon have not offered me a tariff that would be suitable Obviously my best plan would be to shop around but it is not as easy when you have two meters and would like to continue with it on for a few hours throughout the day rather than just through the evening. Has anyone else been able to get any further than me?0

Try EDF's complex metering team. Make sure you are through to them before you try to explain ! They have been very helpful and may accept the two meters. It won't be Economy 10 for everything but they will use the hours from the heating/hot water meter on an off peak tariff.0

Or even the E.On one, as that is the supplier0 -
That's where we began, with the 58% price rise !0
