Thanks vix x. Yeah, it would, which is why I'm leaning towards the second option. BF likes the chalet idea because he thinks we should use it is a holiday let to make an extra income. Think we'll have to do a pros and cons list for both!Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.

Ooh, exciting plans Jessy (although sorry work has been pants)!
Is there a reason why the holiday location is a "retire to" rather than a "live now" location? I know you've got family close by where you are now, so I can understand why you wouldn't want to move NOW, but is the other location somewhere you could feasibly live while still working? I'm just thinking you could pay off the mortgage, save like mad to build up a good chunk of cash deposit, sell your current place and buy somewhere there with the proceeds. And in the meantime, you could continue holidaying there, make sure you like it as much as you think you do, and get a feel for the local area and jobs market etc. It would also mean no paying two sets of bills, not getting clobbered on Stamp Duty (no exemptions on second homes) and not having to build up a new big deposit for an additional home.
No need to answer here, just tossing ideas out!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

Thanks SC. I think we just thought about staying in the current place because, as you say there's family here, also we've got alright jobs and we wouldn't have to search for something else and once the mortgage is paid off this would be a very low cost place to live in. I also can't help thinking what if something happens between me and BF (not great to be thinking about when we're getting married soon but just trying to think sensibly) this place is all in my name and at least I'd have it still.
Definitely worth seeing what the job market would be like there though, I hadn't even really considered it! Thanks 🙂Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.

That's fair enough, I can understand wanting to hang on to your own place, especially when you bought it after a previous relationship endingMortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

Last night I checked my current account and had £230 to last me until next Friday which is payday, so I made an overpayment to the mortgage of £100, and it now stands at £41,700 🙂
I've now finished work for the week and looking forward to a little break. Although my 4 day weekend will consist of dog/puppy sitting for my brother and his gf while they are away for a few days. They rescued a little spaniel earlier in the year and unfortunately she wasn't spayed. My brothers Labrador isn't neutered and the result was 10 puppies! Can't say I'm impressed as I am a firm believer in neutering and spaying your pets but it's not the puppies fault and they are very cute! They also have a French bulldog, so 13 dogs in total to look after. People think us having 3 is hard work 😂😂
We're going to have a little treat of a Chinese takeaway for tea tonight which I'm really looking forward to, as we have been trying to be good and have both lost a little weight. Everything in moderation though and we both work hard, so this is our reward.Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.

Ahh cute puppies!! My son is desperate for a spaniel (our friends have a cocker spaniel which got him hooked). I can't believe the cost of some of them on the internet! 13 dogs to feed and clean up after.....no wonder they need a break, good luck. If you are considering getting a dog please see if you can go the rescue route. Many rescues are overwhelmed but I do know from experience it isnt always easy if you dont fit some of the very narrow criteria many impose.

Well, looking after 10 puppies and 3 adult dogs is exhausting! If I had a pound for everytime I have accidentally put my fingers in poop while cleaning up, I could pay off the mortgage tomorrow! 😂 I'm also walking back and forth to my own house to see BF and our dogs and also for meals, so I'm reaching 10,000 steps a day easily! The pups are very cute when they're sleeping though!

OMG they are gorgeous!! @ladyholly it is very true about the narrow criteria. I've had a greyhound for the last 22 years but RSPCA and Dogs Trust won't even consider us because my son is 10 and we have a cat
When my beautiful girl Hetty passes (she is 14 now) we will be getting another retired greyhound as RGT are more interested in matching the hound's requirements and personality to the home but I have always wanted 2 dogs. It kind of feels like the right time ish with Hetty nearing her time. Plenty of people know I am interested so I'm certain the right little (or medium sized) one will find it's way home to us.
