Roast, cool, peel, salt & pepper. I dare you to resist the temptation of scoffing them there and then! :)

  • Hi guys

Someone very kindly gave us a rather large beetroot from their allotment yesterday - but I don't have the first clue with it! Can someone please tell me how to prepare it, it still has all the roots on etc...do I peel it??

Sorry if I sound dumb - I've only encountered it in a jar! :rotfl:

Tear off the leaves and roots and boil it for 20-40 minutes, until a sharp knife can be stuck in with no resistance.

Take off the boil, and flood with cold water until the dirty water is displaced....and leave to cool.

The skin will be able to be rubbed off; then slice the top and bottom, and slice or cube into a bowl.

Add mayo and cumin and have with a salad.
  • Thanks Zazen - I shall go and find a big pan! Mmmmm salad sounds scrummy.

  • Oh yummy beetroot.
No need to peel. Scrub off all the mud and cut off any big rooty bits. Then put in a large saucpan and boil for an hour, it might need longer, stick a fork in to see if it has gone soft. Keep an eye to make sure it doesn't boil dry.
I like fresh beetroot much better than picked.

    Hi

I need to pull up my beetroot but I can't decide what to do with it. I like the idea of pickling them in a sweet vinegar but I don't have a recipe for that.

What do you do with your beetroot?

    Thanks :)

I love beetroot but not in vinegar so I peel and cut into chunks and roast with a head of garlic, and some glugs of olive oil. Love this hot or cold.
