However, that sounds too contrived. I prefer the universal 'he', except where the subject is clearly one with a female slant - dinner ladies, nurses and the like, in which case the universal 'she' is better.
Anyway, we're getting off topic here. Perhaps use of pronouns should be a separate thread.

You're misreading the text. I wrote about subjects with a female slant. That does not mean exclusively female. It simply means a majority female occupation (e.g. nursing), or interest (e.g. reading Mills and Boon novels). The word 'universal' is used here merely to describe the prevalence of the pronoun.0
