44; in debt on and off since 1st kid born when 24...mainly due to being self - employed all that time. Good yrs we had no debts BUT never managed to save much until the next crisis....then debts build up .
    This is the last time.
Debt free by 45...then start on the SAVINGS!!:D
  • I've been watching this thread all night, but felt I was too old too post, but now some people are starting to catch up. My mental and biological age are so far apart, that I will only admit to being as old as my tongue, and not as old as my teeth. I can't remember when I first got into debt, but I hope to be debt free at somepoint in this lifetime. I do know, that I am insured sufficiently to cover all of my debts, should I die of natural causes, before I am 60.

39 now. Been in debt for 5 years ish. Hope to be debt free in 8 months... before I turn 40
  • Got into debt at 18, I'm 20 now, hoping to be debt free within 4-5 years at most. Only debt I want from now on is a mortgage!

  • Hi, I'm 42 and I've been in serious debt for almost 4 years. I'm on a DMP, that will eventually make me debt free in my 58th year :rotfl:

  • But do you still have a waistline and hair?

    :)

    Waistline - yes
    Hair - some
    :)
  • 45 and aim to be debt free in 7 years. Have been in debt most of my working life (Started at 17 as an apprentice ). Most of my life really. Doing a DMP so tackled that. Next on my list is smoking.(27 years) . Aim to stop 1st January 2008.

Nice to have goals even if some seem unachievable

Off now to sort out a boil on my DD's finger. It is an exciting life i lead you know :rotfl:

  • I did a poll ages ago and the result was the majority thought I was in my 40's! :undecided

I took it as an insult then and still do now. :)

Eeeeekksss! Sorry, no offence meant, just that every time I see something you've posted you always seem to really know what you're talking about and seem so mature. I never expected such wisdom in one so young!

  • Thanks for the hug, lilmissmup. Actually, you've done me a huge favour :T Although I had my LBM some time ago, it's been a long haul and I still have a fair way to go. However, thanks to you, I'm now even more focused on getting to debt-free status. It's my 50th birthday in May 2012, so it would be really great to give myself debt-free status for that milestone birthday.

Also, I've found another way of maintaining focus on my goals: I have a note on my main spreadsheet of what I owed at 1 Jan 2007, less what I owe now, which is updated with each pay day. Seeing the difference between the two increase month by month is very motivating!

So for next year, I've set up a spreadsheet where I can enter how much I owe at the start of each month, take off what I owe at the end of each month, and keep a running total of what I've paid off. I've even set up a bunch of graphs - yes, I know that makes me even more nerdy, but if it keeps me motivated and helps to bring forward my DFD, it's worth it!

Hi meerkat, I'm just like you with the spreadsheets. Very motivating to see that total figure come down.

I'm 43 and was never seriously in debt til I was 37 - a combination of moving house, new baby and hefty tax bills did for me.

I hope to have lost the secured debt by age 50 but can't really see when I'll ever be mortgage-free - very sobering.
