No debts until I was 29, then bought a house on a mortgage so owed £44K, gradually reducing until it was finally paid off about three years ago with the help of a redundancy payment.
No debt since and now looking to save for early(ish) retirement0 -

45 now, got my first debt when I was about 25 (an overdraft facility £800 - used to the limit at the time). I'm hoping to be out of debt by the time I'm 50.
It's a very sobering thought that, when I achieve that, I'll have spent half my life in debt. I think I'm a very good example of why there should be proper financial education in school.
Crikey - now I'm depressed ...0 -
Sorry didn't mean to make anyone depressed just thought would be interesting to find out ages and debts and if theres any pattern.

I'm 27, and have been in debt many times since I was 18. I was debtfree for 2 years, upto last January, when I found myself (through unfortunate circumstances, not of my own doing) homeless and jobless. This resulted in major spending on all fronts, when uptil then I had no store cards, credits cards or catalogue accounts, now I have at least 2 of each and some outstanding utility bills. I found MSE in about October last year, and although I was initially filled with enthusiam, that wore off and I went off the rails. I'm now firmly back on track and will be debt free in 7 months. My OH is working, once debtfree we will have a disposable income of around £1000 per month. We intend to save for a deposit for a house and then overpay the mortage and live happily ever atfer (so the theory goes, i'm constantly looking out for the nig spanner that's due any time  )0
