Well I've just had a notification on the phone saying Three InTouch (calling over WiFi) is to be no more with just two weeks notice.

Details here:
We’re upgrading our network and our Three InTouch app will no longer be supported. If Wi-Fi calling is built into your device, then this function will still work. You can find out more about enabling this here: http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/three_intouch/.

Fabulous. According to Three Wi-Fi Calling is only available on a few Samsungs (J3, A5 or the S6 or later), the LG5 or 6 or the Huawei P10.

All the other providers that do wifi calling either require you to buy the phone from them or be on a contract - I'm PAYG.

  • Yes, this sucks. I have a perfectly serviceable 2 year old phone and get no signal in the office. I'm not buying a new phone just to get wifi calling. Might just switch providers to one with better signal.

No surprise, Three haven’t updated the app since 2016.

Also, their list is well out of date, wificalling works on a lot of newer phones released after that list (I don’t think Three bother to update the list all that often either).

For example, all new Huawei/Honor models are compatible, so P Smart, P20 Lite, P20, P30, P20 Pro, P30 Pro, P Smart 2019, Honor 9 Lite, Honor 10, Honor 10 Lite, Mate 20, Mate 20 Lite, Mate 20 Pro, Honor Play etc etc.

The same for many others, it also works for some brands not even listed, like OnePlus. It also works on most iPhones (since the 6) as well.

  • I just had this message pop and was pretty unimpressed. I've been with Three a number of years now and get no signal at all at my work so this app has been vital. My handset - a Sony Xperia Z5 Compact - does not support wifi calling (though apparently EE released custom firmware for it that enables it so it's not impossible!) and I have no desire to replace it at this point.

I've just been in touch (no pun intended) with Three support, and the person I spoke to confirmed that they're retiring the app though it will continue to work "for a while". They suggested that this has been prompted by incoming network changes caused by the 5G roll out. In terms of other options, their troubleshooting steps were: check for firmware/OS updates, then see if your phone supports wifi calling already. More phones do than the list on their website suggests. But if you're on latest update and you don't have it then no dice on that front.

In my case they're going to send me a "home signal box" free of charge to set up at work so I'm pretty much placated (though slightly wary as to whether it will work with my work network and this doesn't totally solve the problem - I used the app other places too). But I think they've probably done that because I've been a customer for a while now and have a current contract (SIM only) with them so I suspect that this won't help OP.

Jumped on Live Chat and their solution was to move to contract - they do do the home signal boxes but the impression I got was they're only for those who can afford to spend £x a month on a contract, and us poor PAYG customers who only get through £15 in two years can do one.

Told them what they could do with their "move to a contract" option so they did the "troubleshooting" and it turns out "It seems you are in a area of no or low coverage". I resisted the urge to say "no s**t" at this point as I'd already mentioned it at the start of the chat.

The representative decided I could be placated with a free 1Gb of data (which I couldn't use anyway) or £2 of credit - which was totally ignoring the main issue. Having now decided they were clearly working from some sort of script which I'd managed to kick them off, I got escalated to the customer relations team.

In a clear sign that they hadn't read anything of what I'd spent the previous hour typing out to the first representative, we went round in circles for a while and I got offered "unlimited data for 7 days free", again totally ignoring the issue. What good is "unlimited data" with no signal?

So in the end after I peed and moaned for a bit they suggested again I upgrade to an all-singing and dancing phone at some ridiculous price point on a SIM only deal, I declined and they decided to offer me £15 credit which I declined as I may be moving provider anyway, and this got me connected to a manager.

The manager was helpful but ultimately couldn't do anything, as there is no option for PAYG customers to have a Home Signal box. So... new provider time me thinks once I've used up the credit.
  • Ha ha I did wonder why they weren't trying to plug the InTouch app to me last week when there was signal problems in my town...

In the past when ever I complained about signal going down they always tried to palm me off with this app, which is totally useless if you are out and not within your wifi spot.

Oddly no one has mentioned Apple, anyway my old iPhone 5s before I eBayed it had proper Three WiFi calling. Much better than the horrible In Touch app that separates all your texts and call history.

I've got the same problem - poor signal from three at home and am on PAYG. Annoyingly, I have a supported phone (Samsung Galaxy A3 2016), which I'm happy with. However, I bought it from Envirophone rather than Three and so it is unsupported. I phoned three and their only solution was to buy a new phone from Three (guy seemed confused that I didn't want a contact!) They didn't mention the home signal box - I would be ok to buy one.

Anyone got any solutions, otherwise I'll have to switch network which is a pity as I appreciate the cheap PAYG rates on Three

There are several Three signal boxes for sale on eBay.

There are methods to update the firmware to the Three version (or at least to the unbranded generic version, which is sometimes all that is needed on newer firmware/models) to allow VoLTE and Wificalling. It needs to be flashed using a Samsung program called Odin.

If you aren’t confident, your local phone shop might be willing to help.
