I've got the same problem - poor signal from three at home and am on PAYG. Annoyingly, I have a supported phone (Samsung Galaxy A3 2016), which I'm happy with. However, I bought it from Envirophone rather than Three and so it is unsupported. I phoned three and their only solution was to buy a new phone from Three (guy seemed confused that I didn't want a contact!) They didn't mention the home signal box - I would be ok to buy one.

Anyone got any solutions, otherwise I'll have to switch network which is a pity as I appreciate the cheap PAYG rates on Three

O2 have the same 3p-2p-1p PAYG rates as Three.

I joined Three for these rates, even though I have no coverage at home, because of Three In Touch. I do now have quite an old phone, which I wouldn't mind updating to one with WiFi Calling, but I would have to buy it from Three to be guaranteed that it will work on Three, and I don't like any of their phones. So I am changing to O2, who have coverage in my house, and I don't need a new phone straight away but can have my own choice as and when I like. Win-win, if all goes according to plan!

As a family, we have been with Three for over ten years and won't hear a word against them!!!!!!

Meanwhile, we have always used Skype* for wi-fi calling anyway as for some time, as a family, we haven't had the right phones for the "in touch app" and Three used to include Skype on some of their phones anyway. Quite a few "not-spots" around here so being able to call or message using wi-fi is most useful.

    * other internet telephony providers are available!!

There are methods to update the firmware to the Three version (or at least to the unbranded generic version, which is sometimes all that is needed on newer firmware/models) to allow VoLTE and Wificalling. It needs to be flashed using a Samsung program called Odin.

If you aren’t confident, your local phone shop might be willing to help.

I'd like to have a go at this. Have found odin software, but don't know what firmware I need for my Samsung x-cover 4. Any help appreciated...

There are several Three signal boxes for sale on eBay.

Yes, I've seen these. Three say you are supposed to send them back if you transfer away from them otherwise you have to pay £75. They clearly don't enforce this, given the number of them for sale on ebay.

Problem is that that these boxes have to be registered with Three and will only work if you have your number registered to them through Three. Ebayers seem to keep quiet about this and I think it could be an issue. - Anybody with experience please let me know.

I'm currently "corresponding" with Three about this through the Resolver https://complaint.resolver.co.uk. I say "corresponding" because I'm clearly chatting with a bot. I find it quite amazing that even when I have escalated this to a complaint I've still not got a real person. I will persist until I get to the Ombudsman stage. I'm looking for a free home signal box from them (actually I'd even pay a reasonable price for one) or a refund of credit for me any my family who can now no longer use our phones at home. Three say that "most phones now have wifi calling". This is complete nonsense and I really don't believe that supporting their app would have actually cost them much (no developer had been near it for years anyway as it was full of bugs). It was once a big selling point of their service and yte main reason I went with them in a mobile blackspot.

I would download the firmware from here https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-xcover-4/firmware/SM-G390F/

And then use Odin listed in this article which is specifically about the xcover (ignore the actual article as it’s about rooting which isn’t required to update firmware, just go to the bit about Odin)

    https://www.androidinfotech.com/root-samsung-galaxy-xcover-4-sm-g390f-y-oreo/

The above links to here for Odin

    https://www.androidinfotech.com/download-odin-all-versions/

And a brief guide on using Odin

Lots of different firmware files here for my model. I see Ireland (Three) but not UK (Three), although there are UK and UK / Ireland versions that do not specify carrier (8.1 instead of 9). Not sure what to go for....?

Unfortunately that means Three never sold your model so didn’t bother to make a Three version of the firmware.

Your best bet would be to try the newest version of either XEU or BTU and see if they include VoLTE/WifiCalling.

Do you know which version is currently on the handset?

8.1.0. I noticed that Vodafone do list my model as one that can be used for wifi calling with them, so I guess it's possible in terms of hardware. XEU or BTU or just pick one at random?

XEU is unbranded as sold by retailers (like CPW), BTU is unbranded as sold direct. I would probably try XEU first.

Having said that, I would check what’s on yours first, go to settings - about phone - baseband and the last 5 digits denote the current firmware. Look if it’s BTU or XEU (or something else).

Baseband version is G390FXU2BRH2....I'll just try the XEU?
