Don’t care how cheap or allegedly good Aldi/Lidl are you couldn’t pay me enough to shop there. The whole experience is just nasty.
The Lidl in our town is superb. Recently refurnished, it's roomy, has a great choice of fresh veg and a bakery, both odd labels and well-known ones.
Re wine- we belong to a wine tasting group, with wine from a wide variety of sources. A bottle from Aldi or Lidl is as likely to be the best of night as is one from Waitrose or Majestic.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -

However, the prices are reflective of the value of the Pound against the Euro, which isn't helped by the government's mishandling of the process.0 -
As far as plonk goes, I think prices have generally gone up over these past few years, but Waitrose view their customers as the people who can pay, whatever.
Same with beer - the UK producers have opportunistically put up their prices too; what was 4 for £5 has turned into 4 for £6, so that's a 20% increase.
What I've done is compensate by cutting my consumption, so maybe it's a good thing.
However, the sellers who are hiking the prices are discouraging me from buying their product.0 -
It's not just the retailers pushing up prices - there was an increase in wine duty announced in the last budget which added to the cost of buying a bottle.0

I do agree. The food/wine is decent from Aldi but the whole shopping experience is like being back in the 1980’s. It really puts me off going.0 -

Our Aldi only opened late 2017.
I do prefer our local Aldi to the nearest Lidl (which has been open a lot of years) - not particularly for the food but Aldi seems better laid out and less crowded (with 'stuff, not customers).
We used to shop at Aldi quite a few years ago (possibly 10 years) but compared to our usual supermarket (Sainsburys at the time), we found it disorganised, scruffy and lacking in choice.
Would be interested to know if the posters who don't like the Aldi/Lidl shopping experience have been lately or quite a long time in the past.0 -
Interestingly, the Louis Latour is being advertised on their web site as "£11.49, 25% off, was £15.49". Some sharp practice perhaps?
I split my shopping between my local farm shop, Aldi, and Waitrose.
I find Waitrose can be extremely good value because they keep sending me 20% discount coupons. Combine those with the special offers and they can be cheaper than Aldi.
I bought 6 bottles of their own brand Port last week. Priced at £7.69 a bottle but with 25% off and a 20% voucher, they come in at £4.61 a bottle.
And I bought President butter recently at £1.20 a pack.
ETA: I have an offer on one of my Amex cards for 10% off every time at Morrisons. So I'll be buying some more John Lewis gift cards to use in Waitrose!0 -

I've yet to find a wine I like at Lidl, although they do some excellent antipasta and other bits like that - and I love their fresh fruit and veg! I have to say I've never been particularly impressed with the selection at Waitrose, or the other "premium" supermarkets like Booths or M&S Food. The staff tend to be a bit less friendly, and they are always rather pricey. Of course, if you need help from the staff when you're shopping, you shouldn't even bother stepping foot in Lidl as they barely employ enough people to run the tills and there is always a wait to get served, but if you like what they have to sell it's always worth the wait.
Larger Sainsbury's stores have a very good wine selection, but you should find the best choices in an independent local wine shop. In my experience independent stores are more likely to stock wine from Eastern European countries like Hungary and Bulgaria, which are easily comparable (if not better than) French wines, and cheaper too.
For the best money saving idea, if you have a nice cool room in your home, buy a bunch of cheap Eastern European or French wines and lay them down for a few years. Well worth the wait!Well informed on the subjects of sofas and wood furniture, and well opinionated on everything else :rotfl:0
