Yes, sadly, I think there are areas in every city that are now pretty nasty on Bank Holiday Sunday afternoons and it's always much, much worse when the weather's good, as it was over Easter. I don't think Plymouth's unique.
Aggressive drunkeness used to be confined to Union Street here (very famously in the world of mariners) on Friday and Saturday night, although you'd get a pretty good run for your money on Thursdays too, but this is different. As a nation I'm not sure we're good at managing our drink issues; it's the aggressive atmosphere that's the worrying part of it. 20 years ago at chucking out time on Friday and Saturday nights one copper used to gently herd the revelers away from the pubs on the Barbican, and shepherd them down to Union Street, where the Military Police generally kept things under control. Vomit everywhere, but fights were broken up the minute they started and the whole thing was managed pretty successfully.
Since the deregulation of alcohol licencing hours everything's changed and the Barbican basically hangs on to the revelers. (Union Street is a pale shadow of what it was, very run down, and the civilized drinkers now go to the Royal William Yard.) On the Barbican there are usually a collection of police vans with metal grills over the windscreen ready for the trouble when it breaks out every Friday and Saturday night when the weather's nice, but on BH Sundays it kicks off in the afternoon and goes on for about eight hours when the bars shut. And the Military Police are conspicuous by their absence these days, largely due to cuts in the defense budgets, I suspect.
When I broke my wrist on my birthday a few years ago, falling over drunk - it's a marker of an alcohol problem if you're injured while drunk - I wasn't so drunk I couldn't work out that if I took a couple of neurofen and placed my broken wrist and hand on my hip I could sleep/pass out for the rest of the night and go to A&E the following morning, when all the other drunks had been processed. A&E is horrendously busy every Friday and Saturday night because of booze - I used to work at that hospital so I know a bit about it. We do have a bit of a problem (in Plymouth and elsewhere) and I'm not sure how much longer we can pretend, nationally, that this is okay.
I also spend quite a lot of time on my dog walks picking up glass bottles on Bank Holidays all over the place that would inevitably be smashed if someone didn't the day after, and then it all calms down until the next time. It's so bad that I now routinely have a carrier bag in my dog-walking bag - litter's normal, I get that, but glass really pi***s me off.
67.9 kgs after eating bunny' ears and head, surprisingly. Took me a while to find it, though so I may have used up a few calories in the search.
23/30 please, Shaggy.Better is good enough.0 -

 Glad to be back on track today. I was away last week, got back on Friday and then extended my 'holiday' over the long weekend.
It's a good feeling to be back to my healthy eating and AF days.

Everyone Welcome Anytime of the Month! What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
