We're looking forward to being able to be more spontaneous with short breaks/holidays, when we can just look at the weather and go (subject to accomodation available), without having to check the work holiday chart, make an official request and be limited to your entitlement. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

That is what happened to us, we found out our dog has diabetes last year and he needs to be injected with insulin twice a day.
We are having a night out next month and leaving our two dogs at the vet as they have a boarding service if your pet is ill. It would probably cost quite a lot to leave them there for a full two week holiday, however!:D
Our dog has insulin twice daily too, and our vet doesn't do boarding. We check her Blood Glucose before meals and at other times if indicated, her being a food thief doesn't help. On the odd occasion we have been away together she has invariably stolen food and her sugars went through the roof.
Mrs CRV worries too much and didn't enjoy being away to the point she was double checking during the interval at the Royal Albert Hall during a show we saw. After that weekend she swore that we wouldn't ask anyone to care for her. So I go abroad with one of my sons, she goes to see her Dad in Tenerife!CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -

Maybe you could share doggy care for holidays.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

The idea of a camper van grows stronger by the day! We are quite content with UK based holidays mostly and we do have the option of Tenerife if we fancy some sunshine.
We are looking into the cost effectiveness of buying a holiday home, but having two properties to look after may prove to be a disadvantage as we age, and of course that would tie monies up. Probably we'll stick to renting a holiday cottage when we fancy a holiday- least costly option.CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -

Yes, we are lucky with our vet as they are brilliant. When I left my dogs at a kennel for the night once I really didn't enjoy the evening. I kept worrying about them!:o0 -
We have put d rings in the floor of the new camper so that we can secure the dogs in harnesses for travel but thankfully they have always been fine going to kennels as well. When we had a diabetic cat our cleaner would come in twice a day to give him injections - she still comes to keep an eye on the current cat when we are away as the cat would not like a cattery and is happier having the house to herself.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

I like the idea of rings in the floor to attach the harness to. I use a cage in the back of the hatch area for the collie and harness into seat belt clip on the back seat for the Lab. I then spend several hours vacuuming the seat afterwards...........Grrr...........
My car isn't small but wouldn't like both in my boot, Mrs CRV car is large enough to have both in the boot area at once........... but thirsty!
Still you make your choice and I then still have to spend hours vacuuming her boot..... I've spent 6 hours cleaning the inside of her car in readiness for a journey to a funeral tomorrow so all hair had to be removed, delivering us and passengers wearing black covered in yellow lab dogs hairs wasn't an option!CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -
The van is the least thirsty vehicle (apart from daughter's polo) that we have. Luckily we don't do that many miles generally. Any luggage that goes in the back of the disco will come out furry, that is just the way it is!
I love my new camper - it had a big red bow on it when we went to pick it up yesterday which was a nice touch.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Nice touch about the camper collection.
I joke with Mrs CRV that it would be cheaper to get her a taxi versus the cost of having a car, but freedom to please ones self has a price. Her car does around 1500 miles or less pa. So fuel economy isn't her priority.
I average around 30,000 miles pa so fuel economy is important, but so is comfort and safety!
Come retirement I may return to Bangernomics for me, keeping her with the big car as why shouldn't she drive what she wants I don't pay for it as she points out if I suggest something smaller when she renews!CRV1963- Light bulb moment Sept 15- Planning the great escape- aka retirement!0 -
Just done my local Saturday Park Run on the beach and came home absolutely freezing and drenched after my 1 hr coffee and chat with the regulars. Can't believe it's June.
Now sitting in my fleecy dressing gown with the heating on to warm up.
This weather is making me more determined to plan in lots of long holidays to sunny climates. Been reading up on travel hacking and getting cheaper flights, but feels like too much like hard work at moment.
Definitely considering the following as future holiday destinations-
Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, Vietnam, Mexico, USA, Croatia and maybe a few cruises.
City breaks to Budapest, Florence and Rome.
Hopefully giving myself and oh an annual travel budget of approx £6-8k so should be able to fit in a couple of decent holidays.
This weather is making me want to go now.Money SPENDING Expert0
