$120 to return lost phone

Options
Some time ago I read about rail companies and airlines charging people for the return of lost item. I recently flew with Air Canada, from Las Vegas to Montreal and then from Montreal to Heathrow. When I got to Montreal I went through immigration and security and then realised I'd left my phone in the seat pocket in front of me. I asked someone at the help desk about what could be done, and they told me to wait at the gate of my next flight, and if the phone was found it would be brought to me. In spite of the fact that I told them exactly where it was the phone was, it wasn't brought to me. When I returned I filled out a lost property form, And they replied to say they'd found it, but want $120 to ship it back. Or I could pick it up from Montreal; they won't send it to a nearer airport, or would have driven to Heathrow to get it. I've complained to them but got nowhere. Has anyone else had a similar issue and managed to resolve it? Obviously without just handing over the money! Thanks

    You forgot it

They are charging you a quite acceptable fee for handling and delivery.

So about £68.50. Not that unreasonable to find, administer and ship back to you the item you forgot. Air Canada should not be out of pocket.

How much is the phone worth?

It’s not an unreasonable fee to get it back to you. Turn it round, it’s you who lost the phone so why should Air Canada be out of pocket to resolve your problem.

You might be able to claim on your travel insurance but it’s likely any excess will make that not worth it.

My wife left a gillet on a Singapore Airlines plane. They emailed to say that they had found it but we would have to go pick it up from Changi. I don't think the option to ship was given

Get a quote from an international courier company to collect it on your behalf from the airport and ship it back.
You are responsible for non-checked baggage, the airline did nothing wrong so they should not be out of pocket.

How much do you think they should charge if £68 is too much

They will most likely be sending it tracked from Montreal, or put on a plane and posted in the UK tracked.
To be honest I don't think the price is too bad.
