I log in once a month, submit my meter reading, check the monthly statement to ensure that it's up to date and that my account balance (either credit or debit) is where it should be and download a copy and put it into my Utilities folder on the computer.

I'm presently around one months worth of DD in debit as we are just coming out of winter but that will fade away to become around £20 in credit by the end of July (probably more if the warm weather continues)

I get no surprises because I know exactly what I've used, exactly how much it should cost and exaclty how much I've paid. It takes less than 10 minutes once a month - significantly less time than faffing around on FaceAche

Good morning nigel2lynda and welcome to the forums.

Already so excellent advice on the thread, so thank you guys.

I understand that you have spoken to us now and we have started talking about a resolution. You can continue down the complaints route as you're still unhappy with what has been offered.

It would be interesting to know why a bill wasn't produced and this will be looked in to by the complaints manager.

I fully agree with others, that putting meter reads on to your online account regularly will help to the account up to date.

You can also use the Direct Debit manager tool also via your online account, to ensure your payments are set correctly.

If you opted for paperless they don't send bills - you operate the account online.

You don't seem to understand that paperless billing requires you to check your on line account yourself. It's similar if you do on-line banking, they don't send a statement unless you request one. You check it on line and download it if you want your own record.

Some suppliers might send an e-mail but in my experience with several, most don't anymore.

We are still waiting for your meter readings as per post #9 - for all we know the readings on the bills may be estimated (and wrong)

  • Hi Helena,

As you can see I did give readings during the course of the year as shown below and still did not receive a bill for 11 months, if I had received a bill I would have found out my DD was not covering my usage and I would have adjusted my DD to take into account my higher usage. That is my issue I could have adjusted my DD if I had known it was incorrect.

Date Reading Source Register Bill Date
    15/03/2019 13395 Customer Day / Rate 1 15/03/2019
    20/02/2019 12934 Estimated Day / Rate 1 20/02/2019
    12/02/2019 12777 Estimated Day / Rate 1 12/02/2019
01/12/2018 11252 Customer Day / Rate 1 Not used for billing
18/06/2018 8091 Meter Reader Day / Rate 1 Not used for billing
08/06/2018 7911 Customer Day / Rate 1 Not used for billing
    07/03/2018 6070 Customer Day / Rate 1 07/03/2018

    Match 2018 - 6070 to march 2019 - 13395 is 7300 . at 17p is £1250 plus s/c and VAT is about £1500. Was your DD only £40 a month ?

I submitted 3 meter readings for both gas & electric
And what were the gas readings :-)

As said, had you checked your on-line account you would have been aware that something was going awry and you could have sorted it out last June by trying to find out why they weren't using your readings for billing.

You also had the opportunity in December and again in February when they started using estimates.

All you can do now is ask for time to pay the arrears. £1000/12=£83 month plus the cost of your ongoing consumption uplifted to compensate for your underpayment.

I dont know what you were paying but if you've manage to accumulate £1000 arrears in 11 months then it was £91 a month too little.

You do really need to try and understand your energy consumption, how much its costing you and working out how to reduce it by reading your meter yourseld at least minthly and doing your own sums.
