maybe the same problem as floyd?
did you use plain flour? if you use self-raising & add more raising agent it can sometimes ruin what you're baking
did you make sure you only just combined the wet & dry ingredients? over-mixing will stop your muffins rising properly, it's easily done because the lumpy mixture looks so wrong
I'm sure there'll be others along with some suggestions ... but don't give up
chocolate chips are sooo expensive! I buy bars of chocolate, chop them & make chocolate chunk muffins
Yeah I used plain flour, and I didn't stir it much because I saw the previous posts about stirring too much, maybe I didn't stir it enough? I was so paranoid of stirring it too much!
I'll try again tonight, maybe I measured something wrong.
If I try and chop chocolate up myself I end up eating half of it.Morrisons does a 70g bag of chocolate buttons in the sweets section though, so I bought them just incase they were expensive in Asda too! I have lots of milkyway magic stars, when I know I'm not going to ruin them, I might try and make some with them! It'd be good if they stayed star shaped!
Dogs and Cats are better than kids because they eat less, don't ask for money... and if they get pregnant, you can sell their children!0 -

are you using a proper muffin tin? & are you baking them as soon as they're mixed?
keep trying
the stars will melt & lose their shapebut you could top the cooked muffins with them for decoration, see below ...
my daughter & I made vanilla fudge muffins & I had the bright idea of topping them with tiny cubes of fudge before baking, but they all melted & made a horrible, but tastymess
next time I made a sticky syrup, brushed the freshly baked muffins with it then sprinkled on the fudge cubes & it worked a treat0 -
Clutter,
it's just dawned on me, are you filling the cases full enough?
some of the Susan Reimer recipes say you'll get 12, but I prefer to make 10 good-sized muffins from the mix rather than 12 puny ones
let us know how you get on0 -
what kind of spoon are you using to stir? a metal one's better than wooden, & a kind of cutting/folding action seems to get good results

Yeah I used a muffin tin, and muffin cases, and a metal spoon.
I tried a different recipe last night, a recipe for 'marbled chocolate muffins' where it was half vanilla and half chocolate, and they came out flat too! I fill them about 3/4 full.
They taste okay, just don't look muffiny! Mine are more like 'muffin wannabes' because they don't look like muffins!
Thanks for all the help.Dogs and Cats are better than kids because they eat less, don't ask for money... and if they get pregnant, you can sell their children!0 -
Is there a way to stop things sinking to the bottom of both cupcakes and muffins? As well as mine always being flat, they always end up with loads of chocolate and stuff at the bottom, but nothing anywhere else! I must be doing loads of things wrong!Dogs and Cats are better than kids because they eat less, don't ask for money... and if they get pregnant, you can sell their children!0

Hmm, coating the chocolate in flour may help. Some on here say they put some mix in, cook for a few minutes, then add the choclate/etc , top with mixture and cook . I think this would work as you get a slightly more robust bottom to hold the chocolate in placeA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I thought you wern't meant to open an oven when things are cooking though, because then things become flat? But then again I guess if mine are already flat then it can't do much worse to them!
Thanks for the help, I'll try that.Dogs and Cats are better than kids because they eat less, don't ask for money... and if they get pregnant, you can sell their children!0 -
I would have thought the same Clutter, but it was in a thread about stopping a blob of jam from sinking? Maybe 3 pages back? Sorry in work, and it's mnuch harder to search here but if you have a look you can see what I mean
I've not done it myself !
