but my point is, due to the fact that the suits come as a three piece, they are going to be out of pocket by quite a lot due to the price of the suits (and won't be able to do anything with the jacket and waist coat that comes with the replacement trouser)
True, but that's just how it is. If they've made the error they have to correct it. Depending on their ethics they may try anything to put the blame on you so it's always good to have as much evidence to back it up as possible, but in the first instance perhaps just taking them to the store and showing them will be enough. If they care about their customers then they'll be helpful and correct the error without issue.0 -

That's their problem, not yours. You purchased a suit as a matching set for a single price and that's what you're entitled to. If they no longer have stock in your size then they will have to refund you in full.0 -

No I don't. I'm not that familiar with how professional alterations work so I can't really comment on whether they remove the material or not. I know how I alter my own clothes, but that's where it ends.0 -

As a short person who has trousers tailored with just about every purchase, combined with grade A needlework O level (:D), the only way that the trousers will have been altered to this degree is by cutting off an additional six inches of the fabric.0 -
do you think they can be salvaged or is the only option replacement?0

Unless they have done the most appalling job of turning a hem and the hem depth is more than the length discrepancy, ie at least six inches, then there is no way of rectifying their mistake other than by replacing the trousers. I would insist on the whole suit being swapped as there may well be shade variations in the fabric if the replacement trousers come from a different production batch.0 -
very scared now if they don't replace as this was a load of money for a suit!0
