Calling all Regulars/Board Guides Help Needed

OK we're working on the forums.

The likely outcome is this

We recover all posts and threads from before June and add them to whats on the site.

What's lost

It's likely (though not definite) we've lost all posts made after June on threads started before June. Actually this won't be that many but it will be some of the big threads e.g. reclaiming bank charges.

Can I ask for your help

The forum's simply too big or the MSE team to know what's important in every board, but regulars in that board will know what's important and what's missing (if we can stick to the important ones that'd be great)

Can someone in each board start a 'what's missing but we need to get thread' (pls check someone else hasn't dont it before you) and a wee explanation of what its about.

Then if you could go to google, search for the thread and grab what's missing from Google Cache; and report youv'e got it in that thread it'd be great.

Please dont repost it yet - as its best to wait until after we restore the pre-june threads. But if you could store it - as there's a worry google cache will delete these old pages.

This would be a great help.

Thanks in advance and sorry to have to ask

I hope this makes sense

Martin

PS thanks to edilass for inspiring this

  • Can I just say that when you Google search its best you click on the cached link under the link that you find.

The other problem is if the thread is more than a page long, and it will only show 10 posts per page, that when you click over on to the next page it will default to no posts, equally so if you click back if the cached thread is onto page 2 it will show no posts.

Also copy and paste the exact thread title into Google search and the thread you are looking for should come up as the first search if you add moneysavingexpert.

i noticed this thread has the link missing

Sticky: MoneySavingExpert.com Forum Rules Last Updated 29 November 06 (multipage.gif1 2) (link dead)
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=109522

Also rules have gone from this link
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=305655

I try and look for them on google
  • Only page 2 of the Rules thread is available on Google, if you click back to page 1 you'll find its empty.

I have saved sra's A-Z and Members Allowed Signatures on this board already.

edited to add I also have both pages of the Forum Rules now.
  • Actually Martin, from what I have done already over the past couple of days, what you find on Google cached threads are the first posts in a thread that are missing at the moment.

What you are proposing is to find the later posts in the thread and I'm not sure that they will be found doing it this way
  • For instance I just Googled Barclaycard for the Reclaim Board, came up with the thread I was looking for and the 1st posts made back in 2006 but when you try to go into the last posts on the thread this is what happens...

    The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This search has been great for finding those very important first posts like in the unlocking threads on the mobile board but I'm not so sure it will help with posts from June 2007. Perhaps the techie guys can prove me wrong?

edited to add the Barclaycard search that I'm talking about...

  • I never did get into that website and when I did get into an actual board ie Reclaim Board all the threads that were showing were the current threads/posts from that night :(

But when I think about it .... if you want the up to date posts, where I was desperate for old posts at that time, then maybe it is the answer?
  • Edinburghlass, please try this and see if this takes you to the posts you want.

Search google for moneysavingexpert plus the thread number only:

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=424559+moneysavingexpert

Then at the bottom of the google results it says:

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 2 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

Click the omitted results link to see all the cached pages. It might not have absolutely everything but hopefully at least some of the useful stuff.

Edited to add: I know you know this but in case others don't: to get to the cached pages, don't click the main hyperlinks in the search results.
Go straight to the "Cached" link underneath, that looks like this:
Cached - Similar pages - Note this

  • Good one mrs_deadline, thank you!
  • A little tip:

If you go to Google & type in the search box cache:[link], it will automatically bring up the cache it has of that page (if it has one)

    For example:

    cache:forums.moneysavingexpert.com

    Automatically brings up this page

Try it out by copying the links of some of the threads with lost posts :)
