my 6 week bill for gas is actually for near enough 11 months. its not right and needs to change so if you need any info off me to chase things your side thats fine i can provide that.

    Thanks

Is it any coincidence that you've actually been there 11 months ??
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Robin 9 - it’s not a coincidence, that’s what I’m saying. They’ve not paid any attention to the smart metre.

As with response to the smart metre - if I am I told by Eon that the smart meters will give a reading on 06/02 why would i assume otherwise? The smart metre is registered with Eon - on the 06/02 it would of started to take readings for gas which they should of appropriately used for billing and not just pulled a metre reading off a handover form that’s nearly a year old. The form has the physical date of handover on. This should not have been missed.
What’s the point in the metre if it doesn’t do it’s job? The reason I don’t give metre readings is because the smart metre does this for me - that’s how my billing is calculated.

While its correct that if the meter is an EON installed smart meter, yes they should be able to pick out the relevant dates reading with no problem. But in your own interests, its always wise to take your own meter readings, just in case there is any problem. Especially if you are moving into a new house.

As long as you keep an eye on your usage and readings either in your bills or via the online portal, there shouldn't be any need to take regular monthly readings with a smart meter. They do make things easier in that respect, but I don't think it means you can just ignore your meter and rely 100% on being correctly billed.... its your money, so why wouldn't you check to make sure?

Why would you not take a read ? ...especially an opening one. Now you personally have no evidence to support or refute the readings with the supplier

Apologies cross posted with mac.d :)

But the suppliers would know when a previously vacant new build, using zero gas and electric suddenly started consuming gas or electric at normal levels. They would know to the day as smart gas communicates once a day and the electric meter every half hour..both on the same day. Many new occupiers on a new build estate have no idea who the supplier is.
That alone is hard evidence of a new occupier. New occupiers opening reads are not trusted anyway. They are vague and in general not reliable at all..Neither are closing readings..It could be a couple of weeks after the hectic moving in process and other more important things take precedence until someone decides to have a look at the meters.
Anyone moving into a new build smart meter property would assume the supplier knows best and is watching every reading being transmitted every half hour. hence the word "smart "
I know how it works, having listened to many occupiers moving out telling me they have already submitted their closing readings because they are moving out next week..so " no need of you to read my meters "we have already done it ". nicking a week or two of usage is normal.

Robin 9 - We moved in april 2018 but no gas was charged from 2018 to current day for gas due to an error on the builders half regarding paperwork. No energy firm was supplying the gas and charging us for it however our gas was live as we could still use it.

We haven't been charged or billed for anything prior to 06/02/19 because Eon didn't supply the gas. Anything used during that period Eon have reassuringly said we will not be charged for.
So you did use the gas but your complaint is that you are now actually being charged for it?

This was a couple of years ago now, so it might have changed but back before my E.on secure liberty meters went dumb, E.on told me that although the meters logged the reading on that interval, they were only transmitted once a month unless a one off read was requested.

Tom, if the gas has been used, someone has to pay for it. If the builder has agreed to pay what was used up until 6th February, you need to either ask E.ON what the reading was on that date or try and get a reasonable estimate based on your consumption since, and ask them to re-imburse you that amount of the E.ON bill.

Hi malc, thanks for your reply.

Just like to start by saying this is issue is currently live with a resolution manager, i was expecting a call back today from customer service but nothing yet. Im not sure about the conditions of the site before, this is something i would need to find out from the builder.

from what Eon have told me is that for some unknown reason Eon where not due to take the gas on until 06/02/19. Anything prior to this wasn't supplied by Eon, or infact any other supplier. it was quoted by a Eon customer service rep as just "being straight off the grid".

What i do know is a handover form was submitted on the day of move in with a gas reading of 00067 m3. My reading now is around 577m3, which gives us that 510m3 figure quoted above when you take back off the original reading.

What we believe has happened is that the meter was running all that time since move in to now, but instead of Eon taking a reading on 06/02 and taking that as my 'zero reading' they have used the handover form figure of 00067 m3. they have inputted a false meter reading for the start of billing date. the callback i was expecting today was for a reading on 06/02/19, my smart metre should of remotely provided this to eon.

my 6 week bill for gas is actually for near enough 11 months. its not right and needs to change so if you need any info off me to chase things your side thats fine i can provide that.

Thanks for coming back to me Tom.

As I mentioned yesterday, it certainly sounds like the property was a shipperless gas site when you first moved in. This is borne out by our advisor saying the gas came 'straight off the grid.'

If we didn't supply prior to 6 February 19, our charges should start from this point. It's good you've a smart meter. As you and others have said, this will let us download a reading for this date and use it to start your account from.

I don't want to pre-empt the Complaint Manager looking after this as there could be other factors they've access to that I can't see. Now the complaint is at this level, I'd continue along this route and escalate if needed. There's more information about how we look after complaints on our website.

    Hope all goes well Tom.

Just to confirm Raxiel. We only take readings from smart meters once a month unless the customer explicitly gives us permission to do otherwise.

Customers have the option of letting us download readings monthly, daily or half hourly. These frequencies can be changed through online accounts once logged in.

    Hope this explains Raxiel.

    Malc,
I was on half hour readings at the time. I'd called up about something (I forget what now) and the rep asked me for a recent reading. When I expressed surprise at her request, what with the smart meter and all, she told me she would initiate a remote read there and then. While we were waiting I asked about the half hourly reading and that was when she told me what I said in my earlier post.

Of course it's pretty academic now, since E.on still can't take any readings from my smart meter.
