Ridiculously High gas usage on New Build House

Hi all
New to the forum and was looking for some advice.

Recently moved into a morris homes new build (april 2018) and finally now my gas has been sorted with Eon. For the first 6 weeks of my gas usage i have been told i have used 5694 Kwh (510 cubic metres of gas). This works out as 135 Kwh a day for gas! My partner and i both work full time, so we have the heating on at a reasonable temp of 19 degrees for an hour in the morning and about 2 hours at night to keep the house warm and be comfortable. Apart from generic hot water usage such as showers etc before and after work and washing up the dishes, our hot water and heating usage is very low even for a winter month. Like i said we both work full time so for about 9/10 hours a day nobody is home so no heating on or no boiler on. (Other things to point out is that we never leave the heating on over night either, also one shower is an electric over the bath shower.)

What could possibly be making our usage so high? Faulty meter, faulty boiler, gas leak somewhere (however no smell of gas on the property). Some things to mention would be being a new build the energy rating for our home and boiler is very good. We have had problems with the central heating system after moving in and the builder had to come back and sort out crossed pipes in the system.

Any advice on what to do next? I have a complaint with Eon open now but they are still adamant i owe them all the money for the gas i have used, but i cannot understand psychically where this gas is being used.

Many Thanks

Tom

You need to have a decent record of your meter readings but the most important is the one you gave the energy company on the day that you became the owner/tenant.

Was the meter at zero when you moved in.

Have you got records of your initial readings when you became the owners or are you paying for all the energy that the builders were using to dry the house out before you moved in. have you been reading the meter monthly and keeping your own records. Are the bills using actual or estimated readings.

When you go to work and what you have for dinner isn't really much help - you need meter readings to be able to analyse what is going on
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • Its not a question about what the builders used because that is irrelevant - the meter was on zero when Eon took over, but in 6 weeks its shot up to 5694kwh. The bill is for an actual usage - 5694kwh in 6 weeks.

When i go to work etc is a help because if im not using gas for the majority of the day, how can the figures on the metre be so high?

You have used more in 6 weeks than I use in a year, for a one bed flat and I am in all day, with gas heating, gas cooker and use a stove kettle.

Read the meter before you go out to work and then when you get back in from work. Has the reading changed? If so, you either have a gas leak or faulty meter.

Read the meter as the last person goes to bed and the first person gets up. Again, is there any change in readings?

Are you sure ? If the meter was installed April 2018 and the builder used gas to commission boiler it would not have been zero when you moved in

Was the house built and finished April 2018 and then empty till you moved in ? when was that ? Who was the supplier when you moved in and did you get a bill for the weeks before Eon took over ?

  • PennineAcute - This is what is confusing. How is it possible to use so much gas, especially when my partner and i work full time!

I will be carrying out a check like that tonight before bed, if i haven't used any gas during the time i went to bed to when i wake up then surely the meter should not have changed?

Just to confirm, you say the meter has gone up by 5694kWh, is that from a kWh reading on the meter's display (or even remote in-home display)? Or have you converted the volume yourself?

What figure did you give E.ON for billing, kWh or m³?

Edit, re-reading your OP you mention the volume, so this probably isn't the issue, but still worth confirming its not been converted twice.

  • Robin 9 - We moved in april 2018 but no gas was charged from 2018 to current day for gas due to an error on the builders half regarding paperwork. No energy firm was supplying the gas and charging us for it however our gas was live as we could still use it.

We haven't been charged or billed for anything prior to 06/02/19 because Eon didn't supply the gas. Anything used during that period Eon have reassuringly said we will not be charged for.
  • The 5694 kwh figure is what Eon have provided us using the 510 cubic metres of gas we have used. Both figures are stated on the bill. These figures are taken off the metre, which has only been on for 6 weeks.

OK so the meter reads 00510m³? Ignore any kWh figure it offers as that can only be approximate.

But the meter wouldn't know that. It just records the volume of gas that passed through it since it was commissioned.

There will be a zero to non-zero amount (in m³) which (as you've had confirmed) you won't have to pay for, and then the non-zero to current amount that you will have to pay for. So the question becomes, was the 'non-zero' figure recorded 06/02/19, and is it correctly recorded as the start point on your first bill?

Whose reading is the 510 m3 ? Yours or is it a Smart meter.
