Miss Sold car?

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone can give me any advice, help or let me know if I have any kind of case here if poss?

I recently brought a Jaguar EPace car and within 6 months it’s had to go back into the garage 6 times for the same issue.

The issue is that the engine service light displays, which the handbook says to take it into the garage. I’m informed that it continues to display due to my ‘drive cycle’ not suiting the car. As Its a diesel I’m informed that I need to drive more miles at higher speeds basically in order for the car to burn off the soot from the exhaust.

My point is that I had no preference initially on buying the car and was never informed of any ‘prefered drive cycle’ at any point. If I had been told I’d have purchased a petrol car. I informed the dealership when purchasing that I compete 6-8000 miles a year mainly to and from work and also informed them of where my work place was so they were aware I wasnt doing motorway miles and to me knew that my drive cycle wouldn’t be suited for a diesel.

I’ve written to Jaguar several times and had the same response stating I’m not driving it to their prefered style and there’s nothing they can/will do.

So the choice I have now is to complete unessesary miles, driving up and down the motorway, wasting my time and money on the extra diesel, and surely it’s worse for the environment too.

Anyone have any advice on where I can go next? Or experienced similar?

Regards
Dean

How long is the longest run you do every week? It may be that if you keep it in a lower gear for thelast 5 miles once a week the engine will get hot enough for the system to clean itself and then the light should not come on. Worth a try IMO.
This problem with modern diesels is well known and there has been a lot of press coverage so why didn't you know about it?
Did you look on the Jaguar site? https://www.jaguar.co.uk/owners/diesel-petrol-or-electric/index.html

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

Run to work is approx 4/5 miles. We got out at weekends etc on longer drives.

I’d had a petrol car for 5 years previous and before that had a diesel but was obviously before the dpf had to be fitted etc... so never had any issue. I just honestly wasn’t aware of new diesel cars and ‘prefered drive cycles’ not a big car enthusiast by any means. I’d gone into the dealership twice prior to buying to get the info on the car, didn’t research the internet etc...

I just assumed that I would have been told/given the info before buying. The petrol car costs more and I’d have been happy at the time to pay it should I have been informed. The dealership have told me that they aren’t told of any prefered drive cycle by Jaguar therefore that’s why they don’t inform the customer. Jaguar then say there is one, just passed form one to another and stuck with a car I should never have been sold in my opinion.

    Thanks again

Did you tell them your driving patterns before you were sold the car and can you prove they told you it would be suitable?

Why did you buy a diesel for that sort of mileage?

FWIW I bought an ex-demo Jag XF 2.00 Diesel auto in Nov 17 and have just sold it.

Probably 90%+ of my journeys were less than five miles in stop-start London suburban traffic, with motorway trips once a month or less. No DPF or any other problems.

If you have evidence what you told them about your trips try for the car being mis sold as Jaguar have admitted your useage didn't meet their drive cycle, whatever that is.

4-5 miles isn't enough to get the engine warmed through and DPF operating correctly (especially if the epace design is the same as some Land Rovers where the DPF is a long way from the engine).

10 years ago I was slowly killing my last diesel with similar trips, my mileage dropped from 20,000+ a year to about 8,000.

DPF regens, EGR failure and 5,000 mile oil changes. It was a Jaguar, but I was in a position where I could trade it for something else with a petrol engine.

I’ve literally just bought and new Land Rover (same a jag) and they made me sign a form to declare they explained all this to me.... :(

    Perhaps they are learning

Well to be fair, they made it clear, explained how the defect arises, how to clear it (go on a long drive At least once a month) and that to look out for it.

From my perspective, they couldn’t have done any more....it’s now my risk....

You probably mis-bought rather than mis-sold.
