  • tile is bluetooth only, I need GPS range, they could have wandered miles.
    (thanks though)
  • re:How are you going to ensure that it's charged when it's needed

The wanderers wife will ensure it's always charged and in his pocket.

There's no Social Worker, one has never been offered.
(I doubt my mother would want one anyway, she tries to cope with her husband herself).

I've looked at the specific devices and they all disappoint/have bad reviews and/or
are way more expensive than a cheap smartphone - which I know will work.

Did you know that as well as the 'find my device' app available from google, you can set google maps to share location on a timed or indefinite basis to another google account?

Obviously it's a matter of trust between the individuals involved, but I find it more useful than find my device because it will still show a recent location (with an indication how hold the data is) if they pass into an area with no gps or data connection, whereas find my device will just draw a blank if you check at that time.

Saves on looking into third party apps too.

    Good :)

I'd personally spend some serious time exploring the reception in areas around where they live - particularly areas of wasteland/other hazards where people might not be around to call for help, then use https://kenstechtips.com/ to find the best value payg bundle on that network for low data use.

As someone who tried doing this can I suggest you go for an actual tracker that can be fixed to the person's clothing?

The problems found with a phone (in no particular order).

    1) Battery Life
    2) Susceptible to meddling by the 'lost' person. eg switching off, random touching of screen
    3) Accuracy - even with high accuracy switched on (which uses battery more intensively) can be out by a street or two, depending on the environment. Plus for best results you'll need a handset with a compass (cheaper models tend to leave that out)
    4) Easily left somewhere
    5) Not discrete.

That's interesting, the phone will actually be set up as one of my devices using my gmail
so maybe that would happen anyway? I need to look into this a bit more.
  • Thanks to all who replied.

There are , indeed, many considerations here but in the end I went for
    a 50 quid Nokia 1 from argos and a 5 quid/month pack from EE.

I would suggest you opt for a standalone GPD device, which is:
    1. Small in size
    2. easy to install
    3. easier to use platform
    4. has good battery life
    5. geo fence feature - especially amazing feature for elderly people.

You can try MA-1080. It has Geo-fence. So you can set some boundaries, and if the person you are wanting to use this device for exits or enters the boundary, an alert will be sent to you on your phone. And also to any other person you choose. I think this device is best for children and elderly.
You can see more of its feature on the manufacturer's webiste. Matrack Incorporation
    Hope this helps.
