And you say your going to get others to give you prices etc which is totally irrelevant as the work is already done this should always be agreed before totally daft on your part. Did you thing it was going be dirt cheap because he lived down the road ? With these other prices what do you manage to gain everyone has different running costs etc and diffenet profit margains. Totally backwards the way you’ve gone about this.
Yeah, I know busy people who don’t live in my road or we’re walking past. It’s not irrelevant as the supply of goods and services act 1982 says the work has to be carried out with reasonable skill and care and the cost has to be reasonable. So far I’ve asked 2 gas safe guys for their thoughts on the time taken to do the job, cost of materials and the bill and they both say it doesn’t add up. If the guy wanted to charge over the top he should have said beforehand and if I had agreed then that’s fine. Otherwise he has to charge a reasonable amount. £637 isn’t reasonable0 -

Not really as the supply of goods and services act 1982 is there to protect people like me who make a mistake and it stops me getting over charged. I suppose you think old people who pay over the odds for have having a tile changed shouldn’t be so naive and stupid. I made a mistake and suddenly the bill is over inflated but tough luck on me for being naive and stupid. Nice one0 -
Well you don't need any input from us then, do you. Pay what you can prove is a reasonable amount and deal with any consequences if there are any. I don't know what advice you want. We've given plenty but much of it is hindsight and you're not interested in hearing it anyway.0

So your decided why’s a reasonable amount what do you know what a reasonable amount should be and what’s included in running costs etc. Just because your busy plumbers which you failed to ask to do the job in the first place say otherwise. Your 90% to blame for the mess your in no wonder your so defensive about the situation you’ve got yourself into0

Well, I know I made a mistake and I was stupid and people here have been very happy to point that out but at the same time this guy knew what he was doing as he could have given me a price. He didn’t. He thought he would charge me an inflated amount because we didn’t agree a price beforehand but after doing some reading I found out that the legislation protects me from this. I guess I just wanted to ask on here what people thought and ask has anybody had similar experience and what did they do. If you are fed up then you don’t need to say anything else. Thanks for your input and somebody else might be along with something to say. Bottom line is he made it sound easy job, just run a new pipe, few hours work, I know how much materials cost etc so had a rough idea what I was expecting the cost to be. He was evasive on hourly rate but sort of said well, I’m I’m servicing a boiler it’s £58 and hour but depends on what the actual job is etc. Well, boiler servicing is more technical than pipenfittinf so I didn’t expect his hourly rate to be more than that. Two other gas guys I’ve asked have said pretty much what I thought material and price. I was shocked to get a bill that was more than double what I was expecting so asked on here. Surprised at people’s reaction that it’s me that is the !!!! taker to be honest.0 -

I thought I knew what was reasonable but that’s partly why I posted here. Somebody might have said they thought the bill was reasonable and I might have been wrong. The two plumbers I asked: first one laughed and said looks like you’ve had your pants pulled down. Second one gave his quote and I said my bill was £637 and he said thats !!!!!!!!. They are totally taking the !!!!. So what I thought was reasonable seems to be accurate and what I thought was an inflated bill seems to be an inflated bill.0 -

No. It’s my house. But I use plumbers quite a lot but they are in a different area.0 -
So how many hours were they there for running this pipe ? Which is clearly an easy job as you’ve already stated. And how many of them ?0
