    Thanks for that. Interesting reading.
So, in this Nirvana, my defunct SMETS1 meter will automatically get enrolled with DCC, who will then notify my current supplier, who will then no longer require me to supply readings to get accurate billing. Won't hold my breath. :)

They are trying to get agreement that it will all be done by the end of 2020, so certainly don't hold your breath that long.

You even get issues with old style meters being hooked up to the wrong properties, so I'm sure it won't be completely flawless.

That not how I read it. There still seems to be a lot of definite maybe's in there. If you are one of the many with a Secure meter then they haven't even started testing them so implementation of them into enrollment is contingent on them passing testing.

I for one will be everso surprised if my Honeywell Elster meter gets enrolled between now and the end of 2020 and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the cost of enrollment and complexity doesn't drive a few more suppliers to the wall.

Meaning that SoLR would have the problem of not only inheriting a heap of customers but would have to sort the problems out of trying to get defunct meters enrolled within the timescales. From what I can understand it's mostly the smaller more vulnerable suppliers who installed Secure meters because they are cheap and nasty.

Should get quite entertaining over the next couple of years and best of all we are paying for this spectator sport.

Way clear for second cohort of first-generation smart meters to be enrolled on central network

The Data Communications Company’s plans to enrol millions of first-generation (SMETS1) smart meters onto its secure data network have taken a further step forward, with a commercial agreement that paves the way for more than 4m of the meters to be migrated from the end of September 2019.

  • Who was responsible for introducing smart meters that are so smart that they only work with one supplier? :(

The UK’s smart meter scheme was introduced by the ex Labour leader Ed Miliband, when he was energy and climate change secretary. The Labour government had a habit of chucking big technology schemes at problems; the difference is that this one made it off the drawing board – unlike a 2006 brainwave from Ed’s brother David for carbon rationing credit cards.

Miliband had the sense to make them mandatory though. I don t think the next Tory government really thought through the idea of letting occupants decide if they want or don t want a smart meter.. It just meant the roll out would always fail to achieve 100%.
Maybe next Friday is the time for the Tory energy minister to change their earlier big mistake when (according to Wikipedia ) SMETS1 meters will not be allowed to be installed as of from 15 th March 2019..Got to be all SMETS2 from that date ,so that would remove the biggest excuse people use for refusing one.. They will still be refusing them even when SMETS9 s come out. They will have to be made mandatory IMO.
Whatever plans the government had, British Gas had their own ideas and they at least know what they re talking about, were trialling them in 2006 and installing them from 2007 .
They took no notice of OFGEM or the government and started fitting them purely because the economics made sense.. They still do , but the Governments mucked it up as usual giving a largely ignorant public a say so in opting out if preferred.

    Interesting spin:

The milestone, reached with Secure SMSO Ltd, affects some 32% of the SMETS1 meter population, which are earmarked to be enrolled onto the DCC network as the second of three cohorts. Migration of meters in the first cohort will be possible from the end of May.

How can a plan, which has taken a further step forward and paves the way, be a milestone reached?

You really could not make up the total disaster of the UK smart meter roll out progress over the last twelve years!

This farce has now been going since 2007 when the government held a consultation on improving the metering of energy supply.

The Energy Billing and Metering White paper stated that "the introduction of smart meters must be proven to be cost effective".

Notice how in Sept 2013 the governments figure for the "total benefit of smart meters was be £17.7 billion" and then in November 2016 the government magically reduced this figure down to £5.7 billion!

I guess the milestone was to reach an agreement - agreeing something doesn't actually make it happen although it looks and sounds good in a project plan which you are presenting to the clueless.

It makes it look like you've actually achieved something that can be ticked off, however trivial it actually is.
