Somehow I think that this is simply not true.0 -
considering its only the central data hub they need to get working for this, they could achieve that.0

More jurno babble!
A SMETS1 meter will never have full SMETS2 functionality, read the published specifications.
Installed SMETS1 meters may be able to support interoperability between suppliers, however that is not full SMETS2 functionality!0 -

Why?
Some SMETS1 or SMETS2 meters are indeed the same model.
If it all due to whatever firmware it is programmed with.
Not the communications module may have to be changed it a different one is required.
And some smets1 meters may be incompatible. However there is no (good) reason a lot will not be upgradable.
Not of course doing it remotely may be a risk suppliers do not want to take. And if they are on site it might be cheaper to just change the meter. However that does not mean it caannot be done!
Additional: I have a smets1 meter that is also used in smets2 installs. So I am aware of the situation there.
Additional2: Everyhing is basically a computer these days. Change the OS change the device.0 -
The fact that it can be done doesn't mean that it will be easy. As has been said, the firmware will have to be updated - presumably on a meter by meter basis. Possibly the comms module will need replacing and that will be need a visit to the meter by an "engineer"
Then the supplier has to get the comms & infrastructure sorted out with the DCC for each meter that it takes on. Possibly easier if the supplier is the one who supplied the meter in the first place but what happens when you've changed suppliers three or four times.
I can't see it happening for a very long timeNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
"Full functionality" as applied to SMETS1, but not as applied to SMETS2?0

I thought the one cleaver thing about this mess was that the meters didn’t need updating with the data center.
It’s a good point the meter serial number will need tieing up with the address. But if they used the old system it should be easy.0 -
They've just started consulting on whether they'll bother to update the DCC to work with a 1/3 of current Smets 1 meters that currently wouldn't be interoperable.
Mays way too soon, just another deadline that will be missed0 -

So long as the SMETS1 meters can manage to switch suppliers who s bothered about if they offer the "full functionality of the mk 2 version SMETS2.
No one but an idiot would want to hack into my meter just to find out what time I start using the gas boiler. There is no point in anyone hacking into my closed system, there is no money in it, so as far as I m concerned SMETS1 equals SMETS2 , or 3 or 4 etc..
So long as smart switching works with some SMETS1 in May then its job done by Capita.
And you people who have SMETS1 meters and are currently fiddling the meter, by substituting the gas meter for instance, then all of a sudden the suppliers will be aware that you have removed the meter and you re nabbed !
We don`t need SMETS2, SMETS1 are good enough, so long as they can handle instant supplier switching.
There has nt been any known hackings of smart meters anywhere in the world AFAIK because there is no demand for it0 -
By May ?? Another "authoritative" statement by someone from BEIS to satisfy their political masters.
It'll happen - maybe in the next couple of years -but in 7 weeks time:rotfl:0
