Landlord wants to show tenants around while I’m in the process of moving out

  • I moved out of a flat where I wasn't "an angel" (I was a student at the time...) and fully thought we would be hammered when it came to get the deposit back. Despite this, when it came down to it the Landlord tried to claim for a couple dodgy things and this gave us a point of contention. We took this to the Deposit Protection Scheme who agreed with us and ultimately we ended up with more deposit back than we originally expected.

My point being: Have faith in the deposit scheme, in my experience they are reasonable and unbiased.

    She isn't losing anything.

The fact that she hasn't accounted for void periods in her business model is her mistake and nothing to do with you. All sensible landlords will have this sort of thing already calculated and planned for.

Agreed. She made a point of telling me this house was her only source of income, as her husband isn't working, so she'd struggle to pay the 2 mortgages as it's her only rental property. Basically emotional blackmail!

It definitely seemed like she'd already made her decision on what she was going to use the money for, so I'll definitely be going to the TDS!

There is also nothing to stop her showing people round with your permission. I've viewed plenty of places before for purchase and rental that were in the middle of being packed and it made no difference at all to my opinions of the property.

Did she leave you materials and clear instructions on how to properly care for the wooden worktop as they do need regular maintenance? I've done this on a previous occasion.

No, there was no mention of it at all.

She was making these exasperated sounds about the bags and boxes saying that there was no way she'd be able to show anyone around, and asked me if I could try to sort them out as soon as possible.

You have paid to be there. You and your stuff.
She hasn't. She has been paid.

She needs to get off your case..... in fact, I'd be tempted to say "No. Bog off" because she is a mardy moo with poor attitude.

Thank you for giving me a laugh, I definitely needed it!

I just want to get out of here and settle into my new house now :(

Well if they carry on getting on my case about it, I may go down the landlord harassment route. As so many people have said, I have paid the rent up until the end of my tenancy, until that date, I am under no obligation to move my belongings out.

I really did feel like they were trying to find things to be upset about...

I would respond with a terse text/email along the lines of:

Rent paid until xxxx and showing the house is a courtesy to you.
If you don't want the boxes lying around then they will need to be transported and stored at your expense elsewhere (and I'm talking about a proper storage company)
