Renting double/single bed: Where do we stand?

  • I do think that in the context of a furnished property that the rooms are defined by the furniture in them??

If there was not bed but a desk it would be a study would it not? If they put a bed in the lounge then it would become a bedroom?

My furnished place was advertised as two double bedrooms

The second bedroom had nothing other than an Ironing board in it!!

I didn't even consider going to trading standards! they offered a single bed to me if I wanted it.

I read it as Double Bedroom

    not Doublebed fitted room
  • hi CHR15- thanks for the insight. Most people here are approaching the problem from a selling not renting perspective.

Can I ask did the property have a bed in when you viewed it and what did the brochure details say?

I'm really surprised that people are so against me taking this any further - trading standards thought I had a really good case + gave me very strong advice - given that this is a 'consumer revenge' website I would have thought I'd get a bit more support but now i'm questioning whether there is anything I can do.

So a double bedroom with a single bed in it becomes a single bedroom, then you take the bed out and put a desk in and it becomes a study. Take the desk out and store boxes in it and it becomes the boxroom, take the books out of the boxes and it becomes a library.

Take everything out and it becomes.......
    a double bedroom.

hmm. I can see the general consensus is against me here. Maybe this is just going to be a case of tough luck!

I had thought that in the context of a furnished property that a double room meant a room with a double bed in... maybe I'm wrong then.

Just because some people disagree with you doesn't mean you are wrong.

If the ad didn't say anything then I would agree that you should have clarified things but with the ad stating 2 double bedrooms with beds and single bedroom with SINGLE bed then I think you are in the right. On top of that there was a double in the room when you were showed round and you weren't told that it wasn't staying. I think they have misled you and you should get them to sort it out.
  • lol:rotfl:

Fantastic Silvercar, you've solved the problem. If I take the single bed out of the room then it become a double!!!!

BTW: you didn't answer my question what you expect a double sleep room to be?
  • so melissa when you rent a double bedroom at a hotel you are happy if you get a large room with a single bed in?

You say you dont like people referring to selling when your renting, so why compare against a hotel?
  • I do think that in the context of a furnished property that the rooms are defined by the furniture in them??HELL NO!!!!!

If there was not bed but a desk it would be a study would it not? It would still be a double bedroom If they put a bed in the lounge then it would become a bedroom? You are just being silly

Just get over the fact that you did not check what furnishings came with your furnished property.
  • You say you dont like people referring to selling when your renting, so why compare against a hotel?

Because when you sell there is no furniture involved but when you rent or stay at a hotel there is. Booking a hotel room is effectively like renting a room for one night.

I notice you didn't answer my question.

Correct, I did not check the furnishings and I am kicking myself for this but I was misled by the agent also. I appreciate all different opinions and advice and have taken your view on board. Certainly I will know for the future to be very careful in checking what furniture is included.

Ok just been on a travelodge website and went to book a room when selecting my dates this was my option:

    Family Room (Non-smoking)
Ensuite room with double bed, sofa and pullout.
    Sleeps 4 (maximum 3 adults).
    £75.00 per night

This clearly states that the room will have a doule bed.
