Our lounge was described as a double reception room, it doesn't contain a double bed in the same way that your double bedroom doesn't contain a double bed.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. My house in the UK has three double bedrooms. However, two of them have single beds in. A double room is a room with the space to fit a double bed.
My house in Spain has three double bedrooms. One has a double bed, one has twin beds and one does not have a bed in at all because we use it as an office. However, each is big enough to contain a double bed (admittedly the third one only just!), so they are all double bedrooms.
If we sold either house they would be advertised as having three double bedrooms.
If you were to buy/rent a house with no furniture in, would you say it had no bedrooms because they didn't contain a bed??(AKA HRH_MUngo)

But that is a querk of the english language. In german, for example, a bedroom is shlaffzimmer (sleep room), so you wouldn't automatically expect a double shlaffzimmer to have a double bett (bed).I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hi thanks. Yep I totally get that if you sold a house you would describe it as being a double bedroom when obviously you would not be selling it with the double beds in it. But this house is not for sale it is to RENT FURNISHED.
To me a double bedroom is room two people can sleep in. If I'm buying a house I would expect to buy my own double bed to realise that potential. If i only bought a single that is my choice the possibility is still there that it is a double bedroom.
With a furnished house that has been advertised to rent with a double bedroom then i would expect that two people could sleep in that room. If they can't until I buy some extra furniture then it isn't a double room until i do this. The landlord has not supplied me with a double bedroom I have created it myself.
Perhaps I am alone in my definition of a double bedroom!! It looks like it.
Oh dear. 0 -

i still don't get he reception room argument.. just because double in one context means one thing, doesn't mean it has the same meaning in another - as you say quirk of the English language.
what would you expect a 'double sleep room' to be then?
a double sleep room (or a double bedroom) to me is a room which can sleep two people?? - that would explain why hotels sometimes give you a twin room when you ordered a 'double' - point is they definitely wouldn't give you just one single.
Feel like i'm going mad here, but guess it's good to rehearse my arguments (if i have any left at the end) before I begin negotiations with landlord/agent!!0 -

err no it isnt. It is a double room because it can fit a double bed in.0 -

With a furnished house that has been advertised to rent with a double bedroom then i would expect -maybe you shouldnt expect and then you wont make incorrect assumptions that two people could sleep in that room. If they can't until I buy some extra furniture then it isn't a double room until i do this-Are you serious! It is declared a double room by space not what furniture you put in it!. The landlord has not supplied me with a double bedroom I have created it myself.
