As I'm considering switching off only storage heater until winter 2019.
I woke this morning go find the heater too hot to touch.
Any reason why it's gone boiling hot today, so much so I switched it off.
Noticed electric was spinning faster than ever before, until it almost stopped after storage heater was switched off at mains.
Very old school eco7 heater.

  • Sounds like the input control might need replacing. If you google the heater brand and model + “spares” and “replacement”, it should show whether spares are available

Oh, well at the moment we have very cold nights and very warm days. I think that confuses the thermostats, which think there is going to be a cold day ahead.

Thanks any way of self testing or should I contact an electrician to replace the input control.

    Had to be Amazon :)
I'll need two of these dials, could that honestly help with keeping storage heater at correct temp
I've sent a description of fault to local Electrician, they'll let me know if they could help.
    Thanks

  • If you turn the input down near minimum tonight and it still gets very hot, then it will probably be the input control. Since it is old it would be good to have it inspected and tested by a sparky if not done recently. Changing the control itself is probably not difficult for a suitably competent DIYer, though.

Quite possibly as there was a drop in temp las night hence I thought I'de lea the heater on for one more week.
In addition to your kind responded I'm also trying to arrange replacement dials for the heater as they have been very difficul to ove in recent years though had that set at below max temp for past 2-3 years as max temp was way too hot for 1 bedroom flat.
Only today the heater has been exceptionally hot.
    Thanks

  • Hi,

hope you weren't drying clothes over the heater last night and blocking the vents.

There are a set of contacts inside heater which open/close depending on temperature, sounds as though these have stuck in closed position, causing overheating, should return to normal when cooled down, so leave switched off tonight.

Don't listen to any sales pitch until you given it time to cool down.

    Thanks msr's
For the sake of a few pounds, I'de purchase two controls.
Are they simple to remove and replace.
(I have m.s. and found the dials very difficult to move at all a few years earlier whenI moved in as the groove part was broke)
Do. I use a knife or screwdriver to force them off and do the new ones snap in place
